the article doesn't shy away from the origins of the techniques.

I really don't see the issues with scientific research taking a closer look at eastern medicinal techniques to understand what actually works. The alternatives to me appear to be are either dismissing all of those techniques as junk without considering them, which is total bullshit, or accepting them without proper scientific rigor, which is dangerous.

Sure. But I think the criticism at the article and western science was misplaced. The problem isn't with the science, its with what people do with that science.

Charging rich schmuks $2500 for a three day "cardiac coherence breathing" seminar is clearly racist.

But I think examining ancient techniques through a modern scientific lens, provided proper care is taken to honor the origins of said techniques and you aren't claiming them as your own, is a good thing.

 

My favorite racist media is Star Trek, which rules because it includes very insightful and thoughtful discussions of war, colonialism, even race and gender, but also has an alien race that is just jews

 

I don't think the article is taking issue with the science. The issue is with the next step, which would be patenting and trying to sell ancient traditions as new ideas and profiting off them, then slowly pushing the originators out.

Haha, I've seen that before. I think that I read somewhere the actual idea was they were supposed to be stand-ins for all of us, like the 20th century human, but that's just coming out of some memory hole in my head that could be totally wrong.

I've forgotten so much about world history that teaching it this year has made me remember who virtually every group and country and etc. is modeled after in Game of Thrones and the Known World of Planetos. Like by far the richest and most well put together civilization in the world being the group of people that are very obviously modeled after Yuan Dynasty and shit. It's all stuff I vaugely knew already but the obvious cribbing from history is still fun to see.
