I didn't know that getting paid cash for your PTO when being fired or laid off was a thing? Is that only for hourly workers?

 

When I got laid off 12 years ago my severance was receiving my final paycheck the day they let me go that was still in the middle of the pay period.

 

I think it varies based on state as well

 

Yeah. California Law, for instance, required employers to pay PTO upon departure. The law says that it is part of wages that are earned but not yet paid by the employer.
