Headline and professional tweet writers are at least 45% responsible for the media's inability to adjudicate modern politics.

I had a full-ride offer to an expensive private university in Minnesota, for being accepted into the Navy ROTC program, but ended up turning it down, as I didn't want the next nine years of my life determined for me. Then again, not being in debt up to my eyeballs would be nice.....

  3. Happy New Year! May Your City Never Become San Francisco, New York or Seattle
Surely there is nothing left to fear in New York, a place that already has tall buildings and high rents. But the pending arrival of Amazon in Long Island City, as Vice recently put it, has some residents on edge about “becoming Seattle on steroids.” The specter captures the particular mix of high housing costs, tall buildings and tech bros.

  5. Isn't it a law?

    From:
There is also a Statutory Pay-As-You-Go Act, passed in 2010 under ... which allows the president to enforce across-the-board cuts if Congress violates pay-go.

    It's a horrible law/policy.

  6. But that makes it seem unlikely that the president would ever act so punitively even if they did break the law (I know its Trump but still). I just don't get why Dems would support a rule for that if the consequences for breaking the existing law are so...unlikely, I guess.

  11. At the moment ... Trumpism would be saying you're doing something without actually doing it at all. And, in reality, are making things worse with the chaos.

Sounds like a man who may be running.

Also, would this make him the first senator to call to abolish the electoral college?

Oh, for sure. And Trump isn’t going to pull out forces because it’s good / not be imperialist as shit in some other evil way. But i think the tweet is a prediction that talking heads will elect to not make the distinction between the traditional anti-war left and what Trump is doing.

To a certain extent, i feel like one sees this going down in the rhetoric around NAFTA.

  14. Gonna be a weird path if he does ... Oregon law makes it hard for him.

Merkley Has Options To Pursue Presidential, Senate Runs Simultaneously
Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley has apparently given up hope that state legislators will change the law so he could file to run for both the presidency and for re-election to his Senate seat in 2020.

But, as Merkley acknowledges, he still has the opportunity to test his presidential appeal while keeping his re-election option open.

In fact, at least 13 states – including the crucial first-in-the-nation contests in Iowa and New Hampshire – are set to hold a primary or caucus before Oregon’s March 10, 2020, filing deadline. And another six are scheduled to vote March 10.

Willamette Week first reported in mid-November that Merkley had talked to state legislators about changing Oregon law to allow him to appear on the ballot as both a presidential and senatorial candidate.

However, Merkley told reporters last week that a new law is “entirely up to the House and Senate in Oregon, and I don’t think the Senate is inclined to change it. So I think we’re going to have the law we have.”

For Bernie Sanders, Claims of Sexism in 2016 Campaign Hang Over 2020 Bid
In February 2016, Giulianna Di Lauro, a Latino outreach strategist for Senator Bernie Sanders’s presidential operation, complained to her supervisor that she had been harassed by a campaign surrogate whom she drove to events ahead of the Democratic primary in Nevada.

2019/20 is gonna be a looooooooooooong time everyone.

I'd also imagine that raising the price of your product by 30% is going to have a negative effect on iPhone sales.

  21. I disagree with that analysis, this sums my thoughts:

With the current guidance, it'll end up being their second most profitable quarter in history. The China (and India) issues are going to be interesting to watch.

I think it played a role, but not a strong one.

Was this one of those situations where you have nothing in your desk to write with, so you just grab a marker?
