I've been feeling like shit since Sunday night or so until now and have talked to four people at work and we've all been dealing with persistent headaches and a slew of other symptoms. I wonder if this has to do with that. We live in DFW, so that's right in line with this map.

When Gritty was first introduced to the world, I was indifferent, as I'm not from Philly and I don't watch hockey. Then when he was co-opted to be an Antifa mascot, I was like okay I can get on board with this. Then when I started seeing fan illustrations of him beating up Pepe, I'm like "Go get 'em, Gritty!"

 

Philly fans had like a 12 hour window of "WTF?? what the fuck are the FLyers thinking" and hten they saw that everyone else was mocking it and they immediately were like "STFU Gritty is amazing"

 

Can someone explain the full Gritty gamut? I feel like he showed up and I completely missed the boat on what he is or represents.

The Philadelphia Flyers have never really had a mascot before, and never really needed one. The team has a history of being bullies and tough and "gritty" and all that...and then this year they decided to make a mascot and the initial reaction from everyone, especially in Philly, was "What in the actual fuck is that thing, this is a huge mistake Flyers what were you thinking etc." and the internet was like that as well, but then he went viral and Philly became very defensive of him and then somewhere in that viral movement it just became accepted that Gritty was antifa.

 

I remember saying at his launch that, in all fairness, if the Phillies tried to introduce the Philly Phanatic now, it would have gotten the same "What the fuck?" response that Gritty got...because it's just a big green weird thing. But it was introduced long ago and is probably the top mascot in all of sports.
