Are any of you familiar with Project Exile? Well, it was created in order to deal with gun violence. The idea was, if you’re caught with an illegal gun, you’re put in federal prison and that prison will be far away from your community. Who bore the brunt of that policy? This is what carceral gun control looks like. If you don’t understand why black people are worried, you aren’t actually paying attention to what they’re saying.

Why are people still focusing on Sam's tweet. Yeah he said eat shit. He was frustrated and snapped. I felt that frustration. Instead of focusing on why he said it, it's "OMG one random on Twitter said eat shit".

And y'all also ignoring who posted that - me. And why I would post something like that. But ok.

  7. "Eat shit" was used as a representative phrase for the piling on from Twitter from various people attacking others, not meant to be a reference to any specific tweet. The phrase was just in my head. Switch it to fuck off and die or any other phrase if you wish.

The beginning of this conversation was rooted in the The Guardian piece. Someone criticized it, at which point we were told that they’re undermining the movement of wanting to go too far too fast. The entire point of this, in my mind, is the ability of people to criticize people within that group or even within the broader movement, in order to ensure that black and brown people aren’t made to shoulder the burden of making largely white people feel safe. I say this precisely because all of these things are connected. Read Rise of the Gun Belt and you’ll see, for example, how the rise of the military industrial complex spread through regions and created the context for gun ownership and still does. We have to talk about these things. Children the same age are dying abroad at the hands of United States soldiers that are carrying the weaponry used on the kids in Parkland. That matters. If we are unable to criticize a piece or something like David Hogg saying people with mental illness shouldn’t have guns, thereby amplifying the notion that people with mental illness are violent, then we’re writing off huge swaths of the population and leaving them to be brutalized and murdered. In fact, this has been going on for quite some time. So, these comparisons you’re making between folks on the left and the right make no sense to me. This idea that they shouldn’t be angry, that they’re not traumatized, that they’re trauma might not manifest when any part of the movements offers them up for further oppression as a part of a broader political goal, is something that can only be expected from marginalized groups. This standard would never be applied to anyone else. That’s what we’ve been talking about here. At least, that’s what I’m talking about. Their voices need to be heard as well. That’s the bottom line. I’m not concerned with whether or not folks are ready to hear it, we’ve been waiting decades for people to get around to addressing gun violence, only from the perspective of victims of state sponsored violence. If those views break up the movement, if they’re not amenable to that critique, then the movement was lost to begin with.

  15. mostly the fact that Michael Bloomberg is a right wing ghoul responsible for stop and frisk which probably put thousands of black men in jail in the name of "safety" from guns or drugs. I wouldn't associate with him personally

  16. Still a good organization with good subsidiaries (including MDA) doing some really good work. Their data sets alone are incredible.

I think in order to truly cut down on gun deaths everywhere we need to be specific to each communities needs. So things like increasing police presence is definitely a no no. As for excess guns on the streets, in homes, etc. I don't have a solution but I think addressing the needs of the aforementioned communities would help cut down on gun violence.

  19. At this point we're either talking past each other or discussing two completely different things. I know we're fucked when the things people said are being misquoted to paint the worst possible version, here's what David Hogg said:
I’m trying to push for common sense gun reform and mental illness reform so we can make sure that these individuals that have a criminal background and that are mentally unstable and have a history of domestic violence are no longer able to get a gun.

That's not the same as "saying people with mental illness shouldn’t have guns." Nor do I think that's "amplifying the notion that people with mental illness are violent" -- I think it is very important to point out that the majority of gun deaths are suicides and part of gun control should be working to prevent those as well. But, I also I think gun control and mental health reform should go hand in hand if the end goal is reducing death by guns.

    Alas.

Well yeah addressing poverty and systemic racism would be the best solution for sure....still want/need gun control if we can get it tho.
