This is simply anecdotal and not meant to really mean anything but I just think this is interesting:

My neighbor has COVID and tested positive last week. 8 days later she got another test and it was also positive.

Meanwhile, my mom’s friend’s daughter got COVID last week and tested positive. 2 days later she took another test and it was negative.

Again idk what to takeaway from that other than just saying it’s weird how different this virus can be person to person

It's weird because it simultaneously makes things seem better and worse than they actually are. Like, deaths are almost certainly going to rise, but where in the world are they getting that 2.5k deaths/day number from? The number being reported everywhere else is 1000 less than that!

The tweet is fine. The point is that vaccinations are helping keep deaths from spiking despite record cases and that’s certainly shown to be true. Maybe I’ll get some flack for this but I feel like some people often pull the “deaths lag” card to try and make things seem worse than they are.

Honestly, I have found the data to be insanely hard to parse out since that website stopped operating in March. I was able to find this just now which appears to be from the CDC via The New York Times:
    Screenshot_20211230-001547.png

I don't really understand how people pointing out that deaths are a lagging indicator are being inflammatory or trying to make things seem worse than they are, when we had 2,494 Americans die on a single day and we are averaging 1,540 Americans dying daily over the week prior. How are those acceptable numbers??? How is that level of death just seen as acceptable and normal???

I do recognize that there are people who are pretty popular on Twitter who like to hype up the worst case scenario, but if you're the government and you are in charge and responsible for people I think you need to plan for the worst case scenario and then if things are not as bad as you planned for then good I guess - but it is irresponsible to just bank on things not being that bad or us just lucking out or whatever the fuck they are thinking.

This is where Kamala Harris saying nobody expected a new variant or Jen Paski scoffing at sending out free rapid tests to people - particularly when they fucking did - is super relevant.

There is a lot pointing towards the fact that we may follow a similar trajectory as South Africa in regards to the Omicron variant, but there are also reasons to remain cautious. Just because that's how things went in South Africa, that is not a guarantee that that is how things are going to go here. There are all sorts of quantifiable differences between the US and South Africa, and there have also been a lot of times where we can't really explain why covid is doing what it is doing but that doesn't stop it from doing it.

A lot of the most recent messaging is really doubling down on if you are vaccinated it will keep you out of the hospital and you will be fine, when the reality is, that simply is not true, and our hospitals are in very bad shape currently and are hanging on by a thread and there is a very strong possibility that a lot of them will buckle if not collapse entirely, and then a lot of people will have much worse outcomes than they are used to expecting in the richest country in the entire world, vaccinated or not, all at the same moment that you have the CDC laying out guidelines that are purposefully obtuse at best that will certainly lead to more spread because businesses and governors leaned on them to because capitalism.

I haven’t been to a dentist in three years, in part from laziness because I moved and I don’t want to make a 3 hour round trip to my old one for a cleaning and I never bothered finding a local one. Since Covid I have no desire to see one. But i figured as long as I brush twice a day and I have no pain in my mouth, I’m fine.
