I never understand why we (and kids in school) recite the pledge of allegiance. It’s gross.

  2. I was student teaching in kindergarten this year and it’s fucked up watching 5-6 year olds do that

I remember getting into a huge argument with my friend in high school over the pledge of allegiance cause I said it's dumb that we have to say it (and that I would never actually say it anyway) and he got so mad at that lol

It's honestly just such a weird thing, as a kid you don't realize it and just think it's normal since that is what you are taught but getting older it's such a weird fucking thing for a country to make their children do every day. Maybe like once a week wouldn't be as weird, but the whole concept of it is ridiculous

one of the things I appreciated about my student teaching placement is some tomes they did the pledge but then other times they would sing songs instead. “Patriotic” songs but it was less creepy than the pledge.

I love asking my civics classes after we watch a north Korea documentary if there’s anything we do in our schools that looked similar to what they do in NK schools with the extreme nationalism.

I would hope this is in lieu of being charged 3 college credits to do it?

I don’t know where to put this because the pandemic shouldn’t be political but…

..I got to hug my uncle Al for the first time since this all began. As a kid, him and my aunt lived across the street and he was basically mine and my sisters best friend. He suffered through several rollerblading ‘shows’ we’d perform for him, when his buddies were over Friday mornings after night shift work (they’d be practicing bow hunting lol) we’d go over and help gather the arrows, and just overall he was our friend. It’s the little things.

I'm all for calling out the grossness of forced Patriotism but name a war in the draft era and there's a lotta dead people who didn't want to be there (who'd otherwise still be alive today)

Yeah but that doesn’t mean a lot of the narrative around days like this, that American soldiers in wars like Vietnam died so we could be free or that they were heroes, isn’t dangerous propaganda. If the narrative included something more like let’s remember those who died in the name of lies so we can continue to seek justice for them for our unjust wars I’d be more cool with it. Which is why personally I’m always ok with anyone who says ‘wait when is the last time soldiers actually died for a just cause?’ on a day like today.

Also today I’ll be toasting to all the people who returned their draft cards and/or opposed American imperialism and colonialism. I’d like to remember that person today because if there were many more of them countless lives would be saved, including many fallen soldiers.

Tfw you eat at a restaurant for brunch in DC yesterday and the president/first lady/VP/first gentleman decide to copy you the following day at the same time you were there the day prior. One day off from meeting them all lol
