  10. It's funny how a statement like this, meant to simplify the situation a little bit, opens up a way bigger can of worms.

On one hand, yeah the CRT/trans rights stuff likely doesn't move the needle as much as you might assume.

But disillusionment with public schooling and the idea that it's best managed by the government and not Direct Democracy is a bedrock-shifting kind of reactionary wave. This gov race probably isn't as relevant an indicator as we'd like re: 2022 nationally, but if it goes the wrong way it could easily one day be looked at as the start of something really bad.

The new boogeyman in Michigan is one of the Republican gubernatorial candidates decrying SEL teaching. Yes, because this country needs less social emotional learning not more of it. He wants to disband the state board of education because of CRT and SEL curriculum.

From what I've heard from the crazies at our school board meetings, they associate SEL with CRT, it seems that they think SEL is basically just CRT in disguise.

I mean once you create a fake boogeyman that isn't actually taught in schools and gotten people angry about that, its a lot easier to switch people's outrage to other things.

What a time to check in on this thread... I don't even want the context on this. I just want to read it and enjoy it a few more times.

  23. It's literally this simple too. That Michigan gubernatorial candidate Ryan Kelley put it this way:

“We’re talking about the Department of Education, the schools, Critical Race Theory, SEL. It’s all Critical Race Theory. It’s all there to divide this skin color to be less likely to succeed and this skin color should feel guilty because of whatever they did in the past...So I said when I’m elected governor and the Department of Education doesn’t want to get on board with getting rid of all of the divisive teaching...I will happily and enthusiastically as governor sign an executive order that eliminates the Department of Education.”

It's a pretty wild bet for these people to maintain that any effort to formalize compassion as a universal value is also rEvErSe RaCiSt or whatever, but I guess that's the cost of simplifying their message.
