so can someone explain some of the tech talk in this thread? Like, why does this happen?

If we did shift to a free, or nearly completely free healthcare system, would all the giant health insurance companies be able to switch to a new service?

Off the top of my head, I know a lot of health insurance companies are putting a lot into marijuana research, so maybe that? Idk

Depends on how completely free you do it, I think there is countries that cover most of the stuff and then you get private insurance to cover anything past that if you want.

You could do a public/private model like Australia, which is kind of similar to above but then you have private hospitals and public hospitals.

I think here in Oslo is like that; although, for my recent back operation (removing a benign cyst), I googled this certain hospital and found it had great reviews, so I went there for my intro consultation, and the GP told me they were a private hospital, and that it would cost $400, and if I was ok with that. But then they ended up not charging me anything anyways (not sure if intentional or a mistake). So even though private, still really cheap (same op in the US would probably cost $2k or more)

It was pretty surreal in my apartment complex after the text was sent out. 114 degrees in Sacramento yesterday, and a swath of us just kind of trickled out of our apartments to hit the pool/complain for an hour or two. Small actions went a long way I guess haha

  11. Damn. I suppose it all depends if you have access to shade or a pool but if I didn’t I would probably just keep the AC at like 82 and shut everything else off.

Kinda wild that most people don't actually need to be using that much electricity to begin with.

Yeah, my wife and I are lucky with where we live because we have pool access / river access a few minutes away. Just unplugged my gaming PC and turned off the lights, AC at 78.

That looks like a huge waste of time, but honestly is probably the only thing their voters want. Just seething rage.

I will completely die on the hill that people who set their AC below 72 are selfish (and I know I'll probably be in the minority on this but setting it at 78 is also totally fine, people over-exaggerate how hot it actually is)

I've had my house set to this for 3 years when we were trying to save what was left of our 25+ y/o AC before replacing it. There's a lot of things you can do to cut down your AC usage like blackout curtains during the peak of the day, replacing/upgrading insulation, open your windows as soon as the temp outside is cooler than inside, etc.
