yeah at this point they need to realize that making their moderate members take tough votes needs to happen. Stop protecting them when it’s not going to help you in the midterms. It’s so stupid.

Honestly, I think I've refrained from asking my kids' school pointed questions about their active shooter drill policy because I don't really want to hear what they have to say. Any specifics they give me are just going to make the urge I have to pull them out of school and hide them in my house stronger and harder to overcome every day.

I realize that you have to do the drills, and I do think they help people to survive these situations who may be a level or two removed from the first initial area the shooting occurs, but if a person bursts into the classroom with an AR-15 and starts unloading absolute hell onto a bunch of little kids, I don't know if it is important to me whether the school told my tiny five year old daughter to run away, get under a desk or throw a fucking book. I want to live in a country where these drills don't need to be done.

This reminds me of that video that circulated after one of the recent school shootings, where kids that were maybe middle school aged are barricaded in a classroom with the lights off and there's a voice outside the door saying that it's the police and to open up. Someone, maybe the teacher, tells the voice that they can't open the door yet and at one point the voice who is allegedly the cops says "bro" and the kids all realize that it's not a cop and you can see the sheer terror and panic and they all start trying to rush out a back door or a window or something off camera.

I wouldn't say that I'm "mad" at Schumer here, but it's just such a pathetically helpless response to tragedy from the people who we worked so hard to give power to that I can't help but feel disgusted by it

  7. A real conversation I just read:

Person 1: Kitchen knife mass stabbings happen all the time in Japan.
Person 2: But they are not on a regular basis, like school shootings here in the US...
Person 1: Yes they are. *posts links to 3 articles. 1 from 2016, one from 2008, and one from 2001.*
Person 2: Ok so there's been 3 stabbing massacres in Japan since 2000. That's not "on a regular basis." There's been 19 school shootings in the US in 2022 alone so far. That's the definition of "on a regular basis."
Person 1: Ban and confiscate guns, sure, but that won't stop the kitchen knife massacres! *posts a link to a Japan mass stabbing from 2021 that injured 10 people.*
Person 2: Injuring 10 people in a stabbing does not equate to 21 people dying in the shooting in Texas.
Person 1: *Posts a link to a mass stabbing in Japan from 2016 that killed 19 people and injured 26.* This was MUCH WORSE than what happened in Texas. Sorry your theory doesn't hold!
Person 2: Again, that was 6 years ago. The fact that you can't compute what "happens regularly" means is astonishing. 19 school shootings in the US in 2022 alone can be described as "happening regularly." How many mass stabbings have there been in Japan in 2022? I'll wait.
Person 1: Remember that Japan only has 1/3 the population of the US. So triple those Japanese mass stabbings and murders. I'll wait.
Person 2: Well lucky for you, you won't need to wait long because 0 x 3 is still 0. "Sorry your theory doesn't hold."
Person 1: Well, watch your back when you go to Japan!

The active shooter drills at the elementary school here do not involve the students. They have the teachers and police involved and we (ems&fire) stage near by and wait for the all clear to enter to “start treatment”

    I hate this fucking country.

I think I've shared this story before, but a friend of mine was pivoting careers and was interested in teaching. In one of her first week's as a substitute they held an active shooter drill, but failed to tell her. So while every other teacher knew what was going on, she thought there was an actual shooter in the building. Unbelievably fucked up. I don't think it was the only factor, but I'm pretty sure it was a contributing one to her giving up on teaching.

I don't get why people don't understand that knifes have a purpose other than murder,. A gun has one purpose, and that's to fucking destroy whatever is in it's trajectory. Even if you use it for target practice, or hunting, you're taking a gun and firing a bullet from it with the intent to shred the ever living shit out of whatever you're aiming at, inanimate or living. It's such a dumb and disingenuous argument to be like 'BuT WhAT AbOUt KnIFeS Or HAmMERs or BatS'.

EDIT: Not to mention that it's one of the few issues where it's all or nothing and it always comes down to well why fix A, because B & C could still happen? No other societal issue do we point to another issue, as an excuse for not fixing the former. Why would you resist reform because something bad (that's mildly related), could also happen?

  16. Exactly! Anything can be used as a weapon. Even a candlestick (thanks Clue!) but yes, like you said, guns were created with the intent to destroy/kill.

I hate the fact that conservatives have so many guns, because they're infinitely better equipped for the incoming civil war. The Republican party is explicitly anti-democracy and anti-civil rights. 40% of Republicans say politial violence is necesary.

Fascism will come in the next few decades, and we're not at all prepared.

been saying it in here for over a year now to some (very understandable) groans, but…it might not be the worst idea in the world to purchase a gun before the 2024 election.

I don’t like saying that or thinking it, but in the event of a right wing fascist coup, which seems at least like 5% possible…I don’t wanna be left defenseless.

Show me in the constitution Chris, where my right to drive and to rewire/demolish/build is protected! You can't so they're not the same! This is the constitution (THE CONSTITUTION!) we're talking about here!
