So glad Schrader got primaried! I did not expect such a quick backlash against him. Overall very happy with the local Oregon results last night.

So the title of this article, if you click on it, is actually not just about Spain and Portugal. The title is:

“U.S. monkeypox case reported, as Spain, Portugal report infections in growing outbreak”

Opening paragraphs sure seem, uh, bad:

The United States confirmed a case of monkeypox infection on Wednesday in a man with recent travel to Canada. It is not yet clear if the man, who lives in Massachusetts, is connected to the growing outbreak of monkeypox cases in Europe.

The case was announced in a statementposted to the website of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Earlier in the day, an official of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said cases in this country were likely to begin to be detected.

“Given that we have seen now confirmed cases out of Portugal, suspected cases out of Spain, we’re seeing this expansion of confirmed and suspect cases globally, we have a sense that no one has their arms around this to know how large and expansive it might be. And given how much travel there is between the United States and Europe, I am very confident we’re going to see cases in the United States,” said Jennifer McQuiston, deputy director of the CDC’s division of high consequence pathogens and pathology.

So far no positive test/symptoms for us, but obviously need to get much further out from it, but holy shit at this news….So the table that my friend and his wife sat at, now 6/8 of them have tested positive, including said friend for which this was a reinfection, as he had it in October. Pretty crazy to see one of these cluster spreads IRL. Since we were at the table over from them, just hoping for the best. Hopefully patient 0 was the one couple at that table that we did not see at breakfast the next morning. The airflow direction would support that theory, even though said couple wasn’t the first to have a positive test

Monkeypox can be a nasty illness, which causes a fever, body aches, enlarged lymph nodes and eventually "pox" or painful, fluid-filled blisters on the face, hands and feet. One version of monkeypox is quite deadly and kills up to 10% of people infected. The version currently in England is more mild. Its fatality rate is less than 1%. A case generally resolves in 2 to 4 weeks.

In addition, there's evidence the virus could be transmitting through a new route: sexual contact. "What is even more bizarre is finding cases that appear to have acquired the infection via sexual contact," epidemiologist Mateo Prochazka at the UKHSA wrote on Twitter. "This is a novel route of transmission that will have implications for outbreak response and control."

"We are particularly urging men who are gay and bisexual to be aware of any unusual rashes or lesions and to contact a sexual health service without delay," epidemiologist Susan Hopkins wrote.

Living in Massachusetts, should I switch over from worrying about getting killed in a nuclear explosion to worrying about catching monkeypox now, or should I wait a week...?
