Np I appreciate it when people call me out. No other way to rethink or better explain my position.

You’ll never see alcohol banned again but I do wish it was more strictly regulated. Perhaps one thing we shouldn’t do is let the alcohol industry spend $500 million a year on advertising.

It does baffle me how many people I see supporting lowering the drinking age to 18

I believe there is evidence that lowering the drinking age is actually good but I could be talking out of my ass.

I will say this—I’ve known way more people that smoke weed every day than drink alcohol every day, and it 100% effected them/their energy levels/etc.

But obviously someone who drinks large amounts of alcohol every day would be way more fucked up.

I do say as someone who is in a state with recently legalized gambling and weed, the amount of advertising both of those industries are doing now is insane. I partake in both and wish they would rein that shit in. The amount of look at our clever (but really dumb) billboards I am seeing just makes me shake my head.

The drinking age should not be 21. Of all the countries that have a legal drinking age, ours is among the highest. You shouldn't be able to sign your life away to die in a foreign war at 18 but not be able to have a beer. Makes no sense.

That’s true but I also would hate to have to deal with 18 year olds in the bar haha. Maybe we should make it so you can’t sign your life away and die in war instead

The answer would be to raise the age to go to war, not lower the drinking age

Also if you gave someone a loan before they were like 23 and they didn’t pay it back that’s on you. Sorry banks and student loan companies

Many 18 year olds are still in high school. I cannot see any way to defend letting people in high school legally get wasted and make dumb decisions

The thing is, I think part of the reason why teens can have such an unhealthy relationship with alcohol in this country is because of the stigma/forbiddenness of it. Lowering the drinking age to 18 would help change that culture, but obviously there would have to come other cultural changes as well. 18-20 year olds are going to drink regardless of what the legal drinking age is, so why continue to make that behavior subject to fines/community service/whatever (something that happened to me in college!)? Idk, I just think it's pointless, especially considering other countries like the UK have the age at 18 and they're just fine with it.

Ok change the age but don’t let them in the bar with me. 19 year old drinkers can be like cigarettes, technically legal in your home but stay away from me please lol

When I was 19, I used to drive to Canada just so I could get into bars.

So you'd rather have them get illegally wasted, make dumb decisions, and then potentially have to go through a whole lot of bullshit with the cops because of it? I don't see how that's better. NJ just got rid of penalties for underage drinking when we passed legal weed, which is good, but not every state has done that.

There’s a difference in getting rid of penalties for something and making something legal. From a public health and safety standpoint, legally letting teens buy and drink alcohol is a bad idea.

there have been studies done that show raising the drinking age reduced the rate of drunk driving incidents.
