I see the House debate on legalizing marijuana is going splendid.

 

You don’t think a business where you charge well meaning but stupid white women thousands of dollars for you to be a condescending dinner guest to them…isn’t a grift? How many sincere activists do you know charge money before they share their beliefs / are willing to educate people in such a way? If their goal is to actually help stop racism then why in the world are they holding back such vital information behind such a giant paywall?

The one silver lining seems to be that their paywall is *so* big that the I imagine the only people who pay for it aren’t exactly scraping by in the first place lol

 

Well yeah the barrier to entry is the thing that makes it coherent, if still objectionable. The transaction as you describe it is only grift if you’re actually pretending there isn’t any substance behind the confrontational method they employ with their clients’ informed consent, which I don’t believe anyone who knows more than broad strokes about it could really say.

edit — also I know so many people whose activism is their profession. I don’t agree that R2D’s beliefs and content are opaque until you actually attend an event. If they were, we wouldn’t already agree Saira is problematic.

“Why would you develop a product for impacting the traditionally inaccessible space of corporate leaders and rich people and then charge the amounts those people can afford?” is just a stretch. Well, for one, based on everything I’ve seen be said by any of the people involved in running it, I very much would strongly argue that there is not any substance behind their content / beliefs / method, that they don’t know how to do much else besides how to be condescending.

Just watch that Stewart panel. The way Lisa Boyd acts is akin to the stereotype of a college student taking a single gender studies course and acting as if they are so much more enlightened and morally superior than the rest of the plebs. Stewart gives her more time to speak than anything else, yet she doesn’t actually have anything substantive to say. She just knows how to hit all the DEI buzzwords.

And no, it is a grift not because the customers are being explicitly lied to, but because they are using a serious political/cultural moment in order to peddle bullshit that only benefits themselves. It’s similar to how Robin D’Angelo does corporate HR anti-racist training shit: the corporate people who pay her wouldn’t actually care if she’s the second coming of Christ here to bestow her wisdom upon the world; they care about having the superficial credentials that give them the *appearance* of being enlightened. And D’Angelo is happy to provide them that, but of course only at a modest fee of tens of thousands of dollars.

Even if it is not a *literal* grift and you take objection to that specific term, it is still absolutely a load of *bullshit* lol

I'm not lol I just definitely know that you don't know much about how that industry functions.
I think I've made it clear that I'm not #TeamSaira or anything, and that I find R2D objectionable.

My activism does not involve paid services or anything like that style of confrontation.
