Russia's Ukraine invasion expected to have 'huge impact' Jersey Shore's economy

The people love to say immigrants are stealing our jobs but without immigrants certain local economies end up taking a toll. Many of the shore towns in NJ hire a lot of foreign students with visas for the summer including many from Ukraine and Russia. I've seen a lot of comments about "now the local kids can get these jobs". They don't want them. I know many people who worked on the boardwalk and beach near me. I worked there one summer. It sucks, the pay is bad and many of the places do not treat their workers well. I don't know if they still do, but when I was in high school many of the jobs actually paid below minimum wage (which I still don't understand why they were allowed to do that).

 

In Minnesota restaurants are allowed to pay less than minimum wage for their tipped workers

 

Yeah restaurants can do that here too. But a lot of the jobs paying less than min wage weren’t tipped jobs. One of the places I know paid below min wage was the arcades.

Yeah the Delaware beaches also get a TON of eastern european/Russian workers during the summer. I did a week in Dewey for 12 years straight with friends starting in HS and a few times stopping at places on Route 1 right outside of Rehoboth opened my eyes to that. Was pretty crazy how virtually every cash register was being worked by a russian girl in their 20s lol

delaware's minimum wage for servers here is also allowed to be below actual minimum wage. It's in the $2s somewhere I think.

depends week to week especially lately. anywhere from 10 to 25 an hour. it’s picking up so it should be 20 an hour or more but for the last few months it was lower than 15 regularly

 

I want to support this approach, but I am deeply concerned about this man's constitutional rights not to be shamed or shunned which a NYT op-ed just told me that he had

 

Philly don’t give a fuck about your constitutional rights. They got Independence hall right there they’ll take you down to let you look in the room where the paper was signed and then tell you to shut the fuck up.

 

Followed of course by a “Go birds” for good measure
