Hoping that there are high ranking Russian military generals or other Russian government officials that will go against a direct order for a nuclear strike from Putin is not a very good safeguard against the end of human civilization, nor is it reassuring in the fucking slightest.

The thing that makes me most uncomfortable and makes me think the risk of this situation escalating to the point of it involving nuclear weapons is far higher than most people in our government and the MSM are admitting or letting on, is that nobody really seems to have a firm grasp of what exactly Putin is trying to accomplish strategically, while at the same time everyone seems to be in agreement that this situation is hugely costly and personally embarrassing to him and that he is extremely isolated and probably increasingly desperate. Those things together do not make me feel great about the guy with his finger on the button of the world's largest nuclear arsenal, one of whose warheads is pointed directly at the city I am currently sitting in.

Is he trying to occupy Ukraine? Does he just want to destroy it, or get rid of it's current govt? If he takes all of Ukraine, does he stop there or does he push into the Baltic states or Poland or Moldova or Finland....???

Pretty sure the gas stations are all owned by individuals in the community. I get that the company is based in Russia, but this does little to harm Russia and much to harm the individual owners and their employees.

I don't think it's getting enough coverage just how badly Republicans are doing in the redistricting battle going on this year. Per 538, the Dems have already gained 11 seats just from redistricting (the Republicans have only lost 6 because 5 competitive districts were eliminated). That's a big difference and it looks like Florida is the only state that could shift things in any kind of meaningful way. I'm not sure if it's enough to offset Biden's awful approval ratings and the general midterm defeat for the party in power, but if COVID is in the rearview mirror (I kinda doubt it) and Russia's invasion has ended with any kind of diplomatic result (ok, I really doubt this one), maybe there's a slight chance of holding the house.
