Saw some tweets about China’s foreign defense ministry giving a statement of support for Ukrainian sovereignty, which is just dandy in context…

 

i dunno why but I have a soft spot for this guy. I think I remember watching a 60 minutes thing with him after all the Trump stuff happened and he seemed about as good a guy you can be while being a politician. Wanted to work on the corruption in Ukraine, etc. I feel awful for him seeing the country he’s supposed to protect fall and his people killed.

 

Really have to avoid Facebook. So many idiots referencing a bullshit story of Trump telling Putin he’d bomb Moscow if Putin invaded Ukraine and Putin backing down. So idiotic on so many levels but these fuckin idiots have no idea the hell a global war with Russia would cause. But then again these are the same people that think it’s plausible for a bunch of hicks to overthrow the us government by force.

 

Scenario I'm seeing play out. So Putin is obviously getting out if this on top and no consequences, that much we know.

Putin "let's Ukraine be independent" but installs a pro russia government....or even easier, just pushes the pro russia rhetoric, using the invasion as a way of saying "look at how the west abandoned you...look at how europe didn't help...papa putin will take care of you". And that sentiment might win. And we lose Ukraine as an ally for the foreseeable future.

 

Another sad part about all this, is that Russia as a whole will be so negatively affected by this, for decades. Economy is going to take a larger and larger dive in the months and years ahead, affecting all Russian citizens. Smaller and smaller set of allies. University students fleeing to other countries. Graduates fleeing to other countries. An overall accelerated brain drain. All for what

 

I doubt it. I see everything going back to normal after a few months or whatever. I think putin and russia will come out just fine

 

Makes sense. They’re pros at making that kinda deal.

 

The idea that Putin can be brought to heel and Russia put into some kind of pariah status is definitely a little fanciful imo. It doesn’t serve long-term stability for any of the nations that would ostensibly “benefit” from punishing Russia like that in the first place.

Barring nuclear conflict, recurring superpower proxy conflict is just the way we live now.

 

And it’s not like NATO powers will ever stop infringing on other strategic states’ sovereignty when they feel like it.
