I know it sounds so annoying but if there’s any weight at all to the idea that Putin’s ego and Great Man aspirations are core to this aggression, I totally understand the division on sanctioning him directly.

There are so many ways he could spin sanctions on himself into justification for escalation, especially after he’s “offered” some “negotiating terms.” He could call it NATO aggression. He could escalate in defiance. He could kick up a narrative that there’s nothing left to fight for but his noble goals for his country. The reason he gives will be irrelevant.

As I’ve said before, sanctions generally don’t work well to force quick turnaround on anything. The ‘evaporation’ of carve-out demands tells us that this is being done with care but also great urgency, and it would be a shame to see this effort dashed because it goes too far too fast.

 

Some girl I knew back in high school was spreading fake news about Epstein's black book. When I sent her a Snopes article about it, she said the whole media is covering it up, then called me an establishment sheep. Gen Z'rs SUCK.

 

yeah i regret to inform everyone that, with the exception of the politically active/engaged ones, GenZ are generally just as big of idiots as everyone else when it comes to conspiracies and fake news they see on the internet.

to be fair, Belgium is at the heart of the global diamond market and it’s really important to their econo—

lol jk Belgium is built entirely on pillaged African wealth, from diamonds and gold to chocolate. The fact that it was diamonds is kind of funny but the fact that they ever thought to protect colonial spoils in the context of this moment is so fucking distressing.

 

For those skeptical of today’s round of action from Europe and the White House, consider taking a closer look at the US export controls in particular. The inclusion of state-owned corporations like VSMPO, whose dealings in material like titanium make them crucial to a number of heavy-hitting supply chains (think planes & scary weapons), isn’t necessarily unprecedented but carries incredible implications.

A friend of mine who works in an industry related to aviation defense told me that it first glance there’s something like 60 individual products — many of which are so important and specialized as to be produced (or their IPs owned) by literally only one company on the planet, and often an American one — that Biden deprived Russia of with the stroke of a pen.

Media will have a hard time explaining these kinds of things because the public in general doesn’t have a good grasp on supply chains or their fallibility, but the bottom line is that the White House came out with teeth bared today.

(Edit — Honestly I can’t believe I’m stanning for the White House here but another thing to consider is that some of these products in the export controls are the sort of thing that maybe a dozen people in the whole world understand the specific use cases for. The inclusion of so many little things like that show a nimbleness and savvy that I don’t think anyone expected from this administration at any point.)
