Just so I am clear in terms of the numbers the Democrats need for the Senate being down 2 seats as of last night, don't we also need to protect over 20 seats along with flipping two additional seats? That would still feel like quite an uphill battle, but getting Alabama is quite the unexpected win.

Yeah they would need to win two seats to flip the Senate, and are defending a lot of vulnerable seats. A lot of people think Nevada should be the easiest to grab. The next one everyone kept pointing to was Arizona, as that state has gotten closer and closer to being purple. That would be the top 2 to target, probably.

The problem is they gotta defend seats in Montana, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania, Missouri, West Virginia...aka all states that are typically red or went red in 2016.

I used to think that the anti-Trump vote would help keep the gains of the GOP to a minimum and that we'd end up with like a 55-45 split in the Senate....now I'm starting to believe that maybe it stays at like 49-51 or maybe the Dems could even push it to 50-50.

 

That just feels like a hard task to bat 100% (excuse the bad baseball reference) on what we need to protect and then flip a seat or two. I guess I should be more optimistic with some of the recent elections, the splintering of the republicans, and the amount of people wanting to run, but that math feels like a lot to me.
