I'm currently nearing the halfway point of Capital Vol 1 and find this is an especially salient point haha. As long as our economic system is built around the monetization of surplus value for economic growth, temporally-speaking, we will be forever beholden to satisfying the never-ending quest for capitalists to monetize the value we create in the labor process that is far and away above what is socially necessary. Capitalist society's project of socializing populations into the traditional "working day" is totally unnatural and unnecessary, since all that surplus value by and large doesn't actually go towards projects that improve the lives of non-capitalists. Makes me think of this thread I saw the other day:
