  1. Hillary will probably end up outperforming Ossoff. No idea what that means, but

  2. Goldman Sachs alum does surprisingly well. Don't know what the fuck that means either, but

How many of those had incumbents in 2016?

To me, these results show two things:

    1) There is a wave of anti-Trump backlash

    2) That wave is not big enough to be able to count on riding it to 2018

We might pick up a handful more seats by being "not Trump", but hard to be sure it would be enough to flip the house.

Good news is that there is still plenty of time for Democrats to actually shape up and get a message that'll actually not only bring people to the polls but get those on the fence to switch their votes. But gotta do it. Or Nov 6 2018 is gonna be a long and frustrating night.

  6. I mean it's probably gonna be a long and frustrating night. That map is **very** hard. I said that before the 2016 election, and looking at it now and the numbers -- yeesh. And in many of those seats I don't think it's a message issue, the demos and lines are really difficult and GOP policies are popular within them. That's why they drew them that way.

I mean part of me wants every single one of those seats to run extremely left, cause if I'm wrong then I get exactly what I want, and if I'm right at least we answer that question for the near future.

Maybe stupid question but did the Obama administration / other presidents have a press secretary / press release speech every week day for months on end or is this new to 45? I don't follow politics too much but I never recall even hearing the phrase "press secretary" on / in the news until 45 took office

  8. This is so weird.

  11. The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much it is whether we provide enough for those who have little.

God damn this speech is still incredible.

Is this saying that "generic D" polled 8 points worse than actual Dem candidates? And I assume it was generic D vs generic R, and then actual candidate vs actual candidate.

But basically the hope is you can look at generic D polls right now and add 8 points to get an idea of the trend? Feels like that would mean very good results

  13. Yep. That's one positive. Over performs generic ballot, usually spells trouble in the future ... so basically the trend *should* worry GOP. Even if they won. In 2018 if Dems go wide. R's can't focus the money. Could bode well.

  14. I truly am just at a loss of what to make of the SC race.

From what I know of Saudi politics, which is admittedly very little, isn't this a possibly dangerous move as far as stabilization of the country goes?

  18. Random thought: We don't see "Obama woulda won" memes very much, but that woulda pretty much been a sure thing.

I've noticed some on the left being pretty disingenuous when it comes to Islam. There's a middle ground between people like Bill Maher/Sam Harris who think Islam is far and away much worse than everything else and people who act like Islam is totally great and fine. Like every religion, some of it is good and some of it is bad. No need to ignore either one.

Can't say this enough. It wasn't the white working class that put Trump in, it is these people:

    Yep:

Also, it occurs to me that when people refer to "suburban voters", they're talking about white people. I say that, because I seem to recall that demographics have shifted and a significant percentage of minorities now live in the suburbs.

If we are interested in liberation, I think we need to be careful about the ways in which we actually issue criticism. Across the spectrum, there is a deficiency in analyses that lends itself to regressive politics. For example, there's no middle ground between the racism of Harris and the abstention of others. This is a fictitious dichotomy that empowers the stagnant categories of the status quo. In any event, I would recommend reading Althusser if you're at all interested in understanding how ideology operates in the world.
