I feel like, once you learn anything about American history, the part of you that wants to be proud dies. That's how it was for me after reading Zinn and Chomsky, anyway. Or, as I like to call them, the Fisher Price Kit for baby radicals/lefties.

Was subjected to the following xenophobic and confusing statements and expositions during today's visit to the dentist.

-An assertion that Indian doctors should go back to India to practice medicine.
-A notification that bride burning takes place in India (in this hygienist's mind, related to the first point?)
-Blasting India and China for their inattention to cleaning up their environment and pollution, because here regulation has gotten so much better and we have clean drinking water. My interjection: "Except Flint"
-Expressing horror that Iran, Iraq, and China are on the UN HRC: 1. Iran is not on the UN HRC. 2. The US has committed its massive share of human rights violations for centuries.
-Shitting on the Soviet Union and supporting Russia, but importantly, this argument was only mobilized through the framework of the US Christian right ("you had to be athiest in the Soviet Union")

Took some massive restraint not to interject on these statements but I'm hopefully moving soon and will never go back there again.

 

On Twitter when I would tweet something neg about Trump tons of people would be @ing me like "die b*tch" and stuff like that. The tone has changed so much in the past couple weeks. There isn't near as much hate speech being thrown at me. I recognize some of the usernames bc they attack me often lol but now they have completely changed their tune and have turned on Trump. That's really interesting to me.

I just wish someone actually challenged Trump during the primary/campaign and made him answer the question, "what do you mean by 'great' and 'again' specifically?"

 

Like Jason said, American patriotism is like school spirit. However I would add the context of you enslaved everyone else in the school, only vote for frat bros to be president, and regularly kill kids from other schools to reinvigorate your community's waning commitment to your shitty government

I've gotten to the point where I cringe just at the sight of American flag bumper stickers or giant flag banners on houses. Also, the "thin blue line" that has made its way onto American flags - bc if any other cause changed the colors of the red, white and blue flag it would be ripped apart constantly, but nah changing it to black grey and blue is cool bc police.
Like, yeah I'm fortunate to have been born in and live in this country but also not dumb enough to brag about it.
