  1. Remember when communism turned a medieval country into a more or less modern one in like 30 years

Those Cleveland FB live shootings are horrific, those poor people. Don't search for updates on twitter for the shooting unless you want to see the graphic shootings. I just searched it to see if they'd caught him and saw it by mistake. Can't unsee that now, thanks twitter.

Thanks, I didn't realise that was an option. I'll see if I can turn that on. I'd rather choose what I see in the future with stuff like that.

Maybe Bernie will give Keith the list in private or something. I wouldn't trust the DNC either.

it would be nice if the alt-right hating each other actually destroyed them and diminished their power but I worry that won't happen

The thing is if the Russians are funding them like they fund other hate groups it becomes a whole nother problem.

Also doesn't seem like Coachella being owned by a guy who donates large sums of money to anti LGBT hate groups has had any effect on their attendees these year.

"Certainly Isis, like al-Qaida, has fashioned a grandiose imaginary system in which it pictures itself as conquering and defeating the west. It is a huge fantasy, like all millenarian ideologies.
But, unlike the major secular ideologies of the 20th century, jihadism has a very narrow social and political base. As we have seen, it does not mobilise the masses, and only draws in those on the fringe.

There is a temptation to see in Islam a radical ideology that mobilises throngs of people in the Muslim world, just as Nazism was able to mobilise large sections of the German population. But the reality is that Isis’s pretension to establish a global caliphate is a delusion – that is why it draws in violent youngsters who have delusions of grandeur."

Is this basically saying that giving someone with lower income 10,000 increases the amount of cognitive stimulation a child gets at home by those numbers? If so that's a pretty cool study. It's been years since I've taken child development so I imagine this exact study wasn't around back then but so much of my elementary ed classes were about how far behind poorer children come into Kindergarten in terms of cognitive development (and, in turn, reading level)

I think the basic premise is a direct increase in income, rather than something like the earned income tax credit, makes for better outcomes overall, including cognitive development. But, I haven't completed the whole study. I'm interested to dig into it, though. It corresponds to other things I've read that basically say, if you want to help the poor, just give them money directly.

Paul Ryan isn't even religious. The only person he worshiped was militant atheist Ayn Rand.

"The Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 did not eradicate, nor even diminish, regulatory burden, it redistributed it, and reoriented the “point of application.” Following the typical pattern of neoliberal political economy, the deregulation of the airline industry produced a downward redistribution of regulatory burden, risk, and costs to consumers, passengers, and rank-and-file employees, whose acquiescence is assured by the complicity of the state supervised by the market-makers.

The neoliberal inversion of the liberal formula of state oversight in the market promised not only to check state authority, but also to escalate the development of life-improving market solutions. The pervasive profit-maximizing practice which indirectly led to Dr. Dao’s state-sanctioned assault is one such eminently rational market solution. Overbooking, which, by protecting corporate balance sheets keeps fares low, is a particularly elegant market solution because it uses market-making to solve its own problems."
