It seems worth noting that if someone was in this thread on Ramadan making cracks about the "supposed fucking prophet Muhammad" people would think it was in poor taste.

"At the conclusion of its seven seasons it remains unclear if the Bartlet administration has succeeded at all in fundamentally altering the contours of American life. In fact, after two terms in the White House, Bartlet’s gang of hyper-educated, hyper-competent politicos do not seem to have any transformational policy achievements whatsoever. Even in their most unconstrained and idealized political fantasies, liberals manage to accomplish nothing."

Yo, I think it's worth remembering that it has been mentioned a lot of times in this thread that white, bourgeois Christianity and the way it has been used as a vehicle for oppression in this country is completely different from Christianity elsewhere. And a glib, disrespectful, blanket jab at a huge umbrella of a religion whose followers are being exterminated in other parts of the world is shitty, especially when one of the most frequent posting members and mod on this thread has asked repeatedly for respectful acknowledgement and even gone as far as hoping for sympathy. "jfc" has become part of the vernacular, but used specifically in regards to one of Christianity's holy days is more than casual usage. Spend the day shitting on the way white people have used the religion to oppress poc and poor people. Remind them how safe it is to be white and Christian in the US. But respect the beliefs and struggle of Christians in MENA and elsewhere.

What's the point of using a fictional presidency to attack liberals?

I think most of us acknowledge Christianity differs across various regions and the belief system itself it just ideology that can be deployed for various purposes. The American stand has been particularly bloodthirsty, due, in part, to the necessity of genocide and stripping away culture as a means of facilitating the construction of this terrible nation. Given the experience many have had with it and the role it has played as a part of the ideological apparatuses of the ruling class, it stands to reason, in the American context, it would be the source of mockery for some folks. So, when someone mocks the belief or "jfc" and there is a story about a misogynistic republicans, it seems evident to me that that's the form of Christianity being attacked and I have no desire to defend it.

and each time you say this you casually dismiss this part, and more specifically, the bolded:

esp when i'm reminded of the millions of Christians in these places that are even scared to celebrate today.

(also don't respond to me as if i'm defending White Christianity, as if it doesn't oppress me too. i think people are forgetting everything else about me, conveniently, when they say so.)

I'm not dismissing it. I think it is intentionally part of the mockery.

And I'm not speaking to you as though you are. I am trying to elucidate why, given the historically specific role American Christianity has played in oppression, people might mock it and why I wouldn't stand in their way if they do so, whether it is by pointing out hypocrisy or thinking the theology is stupid. I don't think it is particularly clever or anything like that, but if it is a means to cope with the outsized influence the Christian Right, itself forged in the reactionary response to the successes of the civil rights and women's movements, then I don't see a problem.
