People of color are who many believe they're losing their jobs to, though. Strictly speaking, that is not factual, however, the discourse surrounding work and unemployment has always-already been racialized in one form or another.

I saw Steven Pinker being an asshole about it because they said it was going to be diverse.

many believe they're losing them to automation, to regulation, to trade deals.

As it relates to trade, I think race definitely factors into it. I don't think race is the sole explanatory force, I am simply contending that we cannot divorce their economic outlook from race, because, in our society, class is racialized. That being said, automation is a factor as well. The problem is, no one pitched them an alternative. In fact, as I recall, Barney Frank openly said they weren't going to have jobs to replace the ones that were going away.

All I know is that the low class white folks will be fine and dandy, comfortable that there will always be a class lower than them that they will always be immune from falling into.

the lower class can hardly be described as "comfortable"

The lower class people in our area always like to invent an even lower class, consisting of minorities, that's getting all the food stamps, Obama phones and rent assistance. All so they can feel better about themselves. It's fucking infuriating.

Didn't lbj say something about being able to rob poor white people blind, as long as you gave them someone to look down on?

St Joseph, MO is the physical manifestation of when impoverished white people are fine with it so long as they have other marginalized people to blame for their economic situation

Yep, that's exactly it. It's a wonderful combination of well-off white people and dirt poor white people looking down on anyone they don't deem worthy of empathy. It's like a microcosm of Trump's voting base.

I guess I'm wondering why we're back to thinking lower class whites are somehow more bigoted or racist than middle or upper class whites. My experience coming from rural lower class (I'm by no means wealthy but I know enough to know I am certainly no longer lower class) has not been such, although I keep having to preface this by saying I have not lived in the south. Even where you see lower class hatred I don't think its comfort, I think its angry mobilization. Mobilization is not even the right word but blame is being directed. The comfort in racism and bigotry, in my opinion, is seen in middle and upper class whites. The subtlety in their racism evidences their comfort.

I agree. Trump's core base is petty bourgeois. That is the strata from which fascism arises. It is predicated on their fear of decline. On the other hand, there can be no mistaking that many working-class whites were drawn to Trump have been swept up in a similar fervor - a fervor which is as old as this nation and which views class decline in very specific, racial ways, because, in fact, there is a racial division of labor that creates material ideological boundaries between various groups. That being said, one cannot be socialized as a white person without, to some degree, harboring racist attitudes. Even the liberals. They may simply be casually racist or, for that matter, see themselves as enlightened, whilst they gentrify neighborhoods.
