I figured that punching him while masked could be detrimental to your overall goal. I could be wrong. Did it shed light on Spencer's ideology? Then fine. It's good if people are exposed to that. I didn't know who he was before this, and now I know that he's human garbage, but what if media portrayal of Neo-nazis actually has an effect on how people view them? Then there are people in the US who might actually sympathize with him more now, solely through misinformation.

The currently dominant historical conception of why "ordinary" Germans could become horrible nazi murderers is perhaps best explained in Christopher Browning's 1992 book Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland, in which the esteemed historian examines some 125 of the 500 men who made up Reserve Police Battalion 101, a battalion that was sent into occupied Poland to carry out the final solution in its most base form, and indeed ended up participating directly or indirectly (is loading them on trains 'direct?') in the murder of some 80,000 Jews. These men were reservists, not volunteers or party members, and did not expect to ever be sent into the field. As Browning writes, “These men would not seem to have been a very promising group from which to recruit mass murderers on behalf of the Nazi vision of a racial utopia free of Jews.” To quote my own review of the book: "Browning’s question, therefore, is how does a group like this come to participate in the murder of tens of thousands of Jews? The answer, concludes Browning through detailed analysis [mostly of archival, anonymized, non-public post-war testimonies], is a combination of major factors including the distancing of the Germans from the 'other' of the Jews, segmentation and routinization of the task, ideological indoctrination, conformity, deference to authority." As evidenced by the famous Milgram Experiments, those types of things can induce a person to perform horrible acts, and indeed, they did so in the case of Reserve PB 101.

So, in your view, did the men of reserve PB 101 deserve to be punched, shot by soviet forces, by Polish partisans or Jewish guerrillas? You might say, well, Richard Spencer hasn't murdered 80,000 Jews, and you would be right, the fact that he wouldn't be mad about such an occurrence notwithstanding. But, what he does have that the men of reserve PB 101 did not, is a genuine, unindoctrinated, unforced by a military fascist state belief in his words and actions. And those men killed babies and raped their mothers. Those men whose belief in the cause was almost wholly forced upon them by the factors Browning outlines. Certainly a genuine belief is worse, and god knows what President Richard Spencer would do.

The point being there is no practical difference between an indoctrinated Nazi and genuine Nazi. The point being that anyone who is pushed to Nazism by seeing Richard Spencer punched in the head would have been an enthusiastic Nazi in Nazi Germany, considering how those who were among the farthest from Genuine Nazis were swiftly and easily indoctrinated into doing the worst of the holocaust. So, instead, let's not let Richard Spencer have a moment of peace when he is in public, so he can't spread his actual nazi propaganda.
