Apparently people who weren't even following POTUS to begin with started following, and people who had the POTUS handle blocked. I unfollowed it myself after 12pm and noticed my account had followed it again around 10pm.

Ugh, my Republican parents could definitely be much worse than they are (my mom voted Hillary actually) but they're "give him a chance" people and it's getting so fucking annoying. I've explained a bunch of times why it's not that simple but my dad won't budge (I do seem to be getting through to my mom though, who again hates Trump which I am very happy about).

My mother used the n-word this evening while having dinner with another couple. I chucked her wine glass against the wall and told her if I ever heard it in the house again I'd start smashing bottles from the bottom shelf up. (My parents are white bourgeois pieces of shit so other than physical violence which my dad would probably win at that's about as crazy as I can go.) I gave up on words and empathy about a year and a half ago. If it's possible for them to change they have to be made physically uncomfortable.

Wow, like I said, my parents could be much worse, like this post proves. I have two gay cousins so my parents are pretty accepting of LGBTQ (and my dad has what can be seen as a "feminine" career too as a hairdresser), and they're not incredibly racist. They've said some kind of iffy stuff about race a few times but I don't think any of them would go so far as to say the n word. I think the main reason they're conservative is economic reasons actually. They both hate Obamacare but Trump turns my mom's stomach so much that she refused to vote for him anyway.

Really sorry about your situation and it's nice to talk about this stuff with strangers. Thankfully my two younger sisters are like me, I like to think I'm a good influence on shit like this for them

(preface) I'm going to go see if we can bring the LGBTQIA+ thread in General back to life because I've missed it a lot especially the past few weeks [edit: oh snap! it's already alive again!], but I think this thread has been the focal point of a lot of people's frustrations across a wide spectrum of experiences recently so...

It's kind of like you'd expect, where it takes them a bit to feel like they are the ones who are actually being victimised, but it wears off pretty quick and they fall back into, "yea well then you can pay for ____ that you still owe us for" or "you don't appreciate..." or whatever the fuck else at which point I either have to escalate it...(the last time my sister and I tried this my dad grabbed her by the throat and put his fingers in her mouth like a gun to represent businesses being 'forced' to serve LGBT customers)...or try to size up my dad and the friend-husband's level of sobriety versus my self-confidence in not getting the shit kicked out of me. So I usually try and leave the interaction as harshly as possible while still being able to not be in a constant state of fear.

The justification among Chicagoland middle-up class white people has always been, "you don't understand...when we were growing up everyone was saying it" in my experience. tbh Louis CK's take on using the f-word is pretty representative of all words that make minorities feel like shit. It's just "words" to them in the context of vehicles of communication rather than symbols of experience [read: structures of power].

    You know what specifics are?

They're incredible, tremendous, and very smart, and we've got a whole team of the best people not providing any of them.

There's more context to this quote. Anyway, I would venture a guess that LBS has done far more work in the black community than anyone in this thread. If you don't understand why he has this position, and I mean the entire position he posted on twitter, you just haven't been paying attention to America in the last forty or so years. I don't agree with him on a number of things. But, i understand the position, particularly given that Baltimore and Maryland have been Democratic strongholds for decades and it has continued to kill black people, either through police violence or anti-poor policies. The honest assessment is, these people that died just never mattered to liberals because they were primarily poor and black, and thus didn't fit in within the narrative of forward progress. That's the context of Adam's views.

I know this might sound a little backwards, but I believe it's our duty to guard that shithead, lest his inevitable death be pinned on progress.

    Edit:make sense of that.
