I do watch Real Time because I like to see who comes on and what they have to say. There was some Republican on there a while back who was so in denial. I forgot about what though haha

At least here, "sin taxes" pretty much always end up being implemented essentially as stealth taxes on people from lower classes

Maher is a special one as he tends to change with the popular opinion, but does so on an annual basis it seems. That way I guess it's not as noticeable.

Just watched Trump's spokesperson Katrina Pierson make a fool of herself on CNN. Wolf asked her like 4 different times if Trump still supported banning people on the terror watch list from buying guns. She kept dodging it and saying there is more to the question and finally settled on saying Trump doesn't want to do anything that would remove people's 2nd amendment rights without due process

yep. unhealthy/poor (the two are sadly heavily linked) people aren't going to be dissuaded by a few cents of tax, they're just going to continue the unhealthy decision (which is fair) and be poorer for it (which is not fair). i think we need to hold producers of high-sugar products (like soda), as well as those of tobacco and alcohol products, to include accurate, informative images of common consequences of indulging in their product (a la Cigarette packets in Australia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Goddamnit I'm done with Maher, too bias and too difficult to listen to.

    It's his audience also.

If they weren't there, an actual conversation could be had and maybe some people can get their points across without being stepped on every 10 seconds by a random blurt from Maher and then audience applause.

i'm still at a loss that we can't even get the daily percentage for sugar on any products. it would be a very small change, and likely have no impact, but if we can't even get cans of soda to show that they contain 150% of your daily allotted intake of sugar a day then there's no hope anywhere else.

I watched Maher last night, when he said his thing and the audience started cheering, he turned to them and told them to cut it out at one point, more or less. He does that a lot, actually.

I love the show because the discussions can get pretty good sometimes.

Yea, he does stop them sometimes, but MOST of the time he says things and pauses for the inevitable applause.

Welfare recipients have lower rates of drug usage than other groups in this country. It is all beside the point, which is that drug use shouldn't be a basis for denying people social services.

I don't doubt you on that. I ask because I remember reading a lot of Maine welfare recipients fleeing the state because of LePage's drug testing.

It may actually have to do with being unable to survive in a state with a number of hurdles to access to the basic means of subsistence.

    hmm.

in a sense i'll ask for you to clarify by: what do you consider "drug use" and "social services"?

i.e. i'm assuming you mean something other than, "someone who smokes cigarettes shouldn't get their food stamps taken away". that example i agree with, but on the basis of the topic, i believe yes, social services paid by tax dollars should be taken away if someone is using drugs, if the drug use interferes with social service.

edit: other people are welcome to enter this discussion as well!

That criminalizes poverty/addiction, which solves nothing. If anything, it enhances both and results in the destruction of lives.

Interesting. Would be awesome to see Stein and Johnson get to 15% so they could participate in the debates.

Exactly. Addiction is a real thing. Cutting people off from supports instead of using it as a way to get the help (for free) is absurd.

I am about as anti-drug as it comes, but it's fucking hypocritical that in certain states now weed is ok and in other states that means you can't get food stamps.

Late, but really I don't. I have plenty of republican friends, but none of them support trump. I would add that given his remarks there isn't a way I could maintain any semblance of a polite relationship with someone who supports a person that racist/bigoted/sexist/the list goes on...

This video sums up quite nicely just how misinformed/irrational the British public are about the EU referendum and the issues that surround it such as immigration and the economy. Voting takes place tomorrow.
