In my hometown, there's a ton of tobacco farms so if it's spring or fall you can stuck behind the tractors pulling the tobacco

The suburb of Knoxville I live in has just over 9,000 people. Knoxville has 184,000 or so, plus UT students.

Y'all is correct in spelling and grammar. There was a two-class-long debate while I was getting my English degree because some Yanks thought y'all wasn't grammatically correct.

 

I will say it's pretty cool to get behind a tractor hauling cotton with it flying out of the back. People call it Snow in GA.

I used to be one of these people because of how I was brought up. Parents told me it was just a "slang word"

 

You know how many times I've had to tell ppl that y'all works like any other contraction. The apostrophe takes out the o and u.

 

Just take a few inches off. Like I donno... Five.

 

The same person insinuated the use of y'all meant lesser intelligence, too. Watching my professor go off on her was amazing.

Yuuuuup. It's baffling how that's the one that most people get confused on.

I almost said "bag" but then I was like no Matthew that's not correct lmao. That's a purse. Pocketbook is the little snapping wallet that you put in that, or you can also carry it alone with/without a small handstrap

 

I recently said "all y'all'll" and never felt more southern in my life.

 

@Garrett L. I get really upset when people treat me like I'm stupid because I talk slower and "sound uneducated". I say becuz and not because and apparently that's a no no in job interviews.

 

Heh. Nah, it's the giant leaves mostly used for cigars. If it's on the tractor it was usually fresh picked and it's on its way to a barn to dry.

The farms used to employ 14-16 year old kids in the town for decades (both my grandfather and father picked the tobacco) because it was easy money for those kids to make over the summer. But they haven't done it since I was maybe in 7th grade since they switched to migrant workers.

 

A billfold is the snapping wallet and it goes into a pocketbook. With/without a small handstrap is a clutch.

 

i read a while back that the southern accent is basically a slowed down old english accent

 

@AelNire I feel you. Have you ever been yelled at for saying "sir" or "ma'am"? I was told in an interview, "I'm not a ma'am," and I had no idea how to respond.

 

+1 for calling it a bubbler. I actually thought that was just a Boston thing like calling shopping carts carriages and rubber bands elastics.
