Haven't had time to post here lately but this is going to take some beating for my aoty. Phenomenal album. Floored me. I loved the previous two, especially Go Farther. But this is another step up, more musically inventive and unique, and a well told narrative that really has no close comparison that I know of in terms of themes (closest may be what, Carrie and Lowell??).
People's criticisms of this band previously were sometimes that their music was derivative. That's no longer the case. Yet they have retained that special quality where they just can't help but reach for the stratosphere on almost every track.
Kingdom is Within You > Spirit Boy > Brothers is an all time run. My least favourite is definitely Returner but even that is decent.

 

Returner has grown on me significantly. Im viewing it as a rowdy drunken anthem, and the small moments of levity (the post-chorus vocalizations, the orchestral ending, acoustic strumming 2/3 through)

 

Someone posted vinyl stream of the airt demo "A Fantastic Death" is posted on YouTube. It hasn't been released digitally anywhere that I know of, so if you didn't get your hands on the vinyl and want to give it listen you can find it there for the moment.

 

I got this really beautiful zoetrope picture disc for the album, but I don't like it just being in a plastic wrap. I feel bad, my buddy flew the record all the way back from England to help me with shipping costs but I'm really not into how it looks. Does anyone know where/how I can get just a cover without rebuying the whole record?

 

Definitely feeling mentally drained after listening to this 3 times today.

this finally clicked this weekend on a walk in the rain. Feels a little long but has some absolute magic on it

This is a god damn masterpiece. I'm late to the party.

 

Better late than never. Dave seems to really draw from the topics of life, death, love and loss, and I think it’s relatable for most people and you can feel the genuineness in his word and stories.

 

Easily my album of the year so far

 

Love seeing this band blow up here. The venues they are playing are much bigger, Brixton Academy for example.

I think they'll be headlining some of the smaller festivals like 2000 Trees by the end of this cycle for sure.

I mean I want them to be huge but I’m also super ok with being able to see them at 200 person venues for $30 over here. buying tickets at venue night of & being able to get as close as I want is added bonus too

 

probably fell to second for me after FJM but yeah i love this

 

Definitely still my number 1. Not necessarily my most played album of the year, but it’s the one I get the most out of when I listen.

 

Still listening to this, Dan Andriano and Greg Barnett the most.

GoY just have a way of making songs that feel huge. I do agree, with North America would get on board.

 

This is my aoty so far by a pretty wide margin. Seeing them for the first time in a couple weeks too. Very excited.
