Foxing - Draw Down The Moon (August 6, 2021) Album • Page 68

  1. I think that’s a very apt description for them — Pinegrove and The Format are always the first bands that come to mind for me but there’s definitely a retro aspect that I can’t quite put my finger on. Personally I was very very excited for that record and felt a little let down by it and haven’t gone back much, but Big Pop is still one of my favorite songs of the year

I will be okay. everything Supporter

You’ll like them. They exist in a similar realm as wild pink for me, only airier, if that makes sense

that’s fair, I guess I can see if it was a record that you were anticipating based off of Big Pop, why it could be disappointing. the record is a lot less, I don’t wanna say hooky bc it def has hooks aplenty imo… but maybe more obviously hooky? idk. it’s more mellow and contemplative and understated imo which is not everyone’s bag. likewise, I think the record you might have wanted or expected would have probably not hit me as hard. just the nature of tastes.

edit: decided to listen to the AM record again rn and goddamn a perfect moment that summarizes everything I love about the record is the very end of What Gives? when they end on that 3 (maybe more? idk) part harmony. it literally hits me on a primal level I think. and then My Day follows it up and the chord progression and melody is some of my favorite songwriting in forever. it hits me the way the best songs by Big Thief hit me kind of, and I think that’s one of, if not the best and most exciting band currently going.

Another Michael rules. They remind me of Ween’s Freedom of 76 but no real irony…so like a white indie band doing Philly Soul?

I too was a little disappointed in the whole record, but still love like half of those Another Michael songs. Fuck that came out this year? Really good stuff. Foxing will probably be my AOTY, but before that it was Waitsgiving by Fishboy

yesss super glad you dig it. sometimes our tastes really overlap and sometimes they diverge majorly so I wasn’t sure where this would land in that regard. after my listen last night I am pretty confident it’s gonna stay my fav this year. it makes me feel so warm and blissful and nostalgic for times it wasn’t even around for, which is always a good sign.

Yeah the beginning of the year was great with Another Michael, and Wild Pink. Hip Hop wise this year has been less consistent, but Armand Hammer/Polo G/Isaiah Rashad will all probably be in my top 10.

On the subject of AOTYs, aside from what’s been mentioned, the Lucy Dacus, Katy Kirby, Cassandra Jenkins, Jade Bird, Sun June, Torres, Charlie Martin, Mia Joy, Moontype, Floatie, Jodi, Free Throw, Squirrel Flower, Parannoul, SPELLLING and Kississippi albums have been some of my favorites this year, at least in terms of “indie”/“emo” releases.

This album is good but I don’t think it will crack my top 5 AOTY list. I still need to spend more time with it though.

My favourite album of the year by some margin is Gami Gang.

Foxing would be top five for sure. Really digging the new Deafheaven as well. Most listened to is possibly Olivia Ridrigo and for hip hop it'd by Tyler or Brockhampton.
Special shout to the new Hold Steady record which is also still in my rotation. It probably lacks one or two real killer top-tier THS tunes but the whole thing is great. Between THS, Rise Against and Modest Mouse it's been a good year for bands that peaked in the 2000s.

  18. Somehow this record continues to impress me with every listen. For sure my favorite album of the year, but maybe one of my favorite albums in just a really long time. The title track forces me to stop everything and play air guitar
