Have you and your wife used much TVP? I've been reading about that and Seitan a lot and they sound awesome. Those items could really bring a lot of meat-based dishes that I grew up on back into my life, but in a much healthier fashion.

She has but as of this year I've just been learning to cook, and I'm getting good at it but I try to pick easier stuff. She uses it though and it does kinda fix up texture issues I had in the beginning with some stuff.

Yeah, I am pretty comfortable in the kitchen I just don't have any experience with either. Both seitan and TVP seem like awesome things to add to the arsenal once you have a good base. I currently do a lot of black bean burgers at work and it's pretty great. I haven't really missed meat the way I expected myself to. I may try to experiment with some buffalo TVP wings for the NFL draft next week. Chicken wings were an NFL draft tradition for me haha.

I stopped eating meat ~9 months ago after reading up more on the ideas behind vegetarianism in religion. i think most notably it was the reasoning behind vegetarian rules in Jainism. i just kinda realized how much i love animals and other living things and i don't want to hurt them. i'll probably move to veganism in a bit as well if legislation doesn't get put in place to change how awful the food industry is, it's super fucked. I still do eat meat when i'm with my family, though, because my mom already cooks for 8-10 people when we're home and i don't want her to have to do more work.

i kinda get why people don't go vegetarian - taste, health, habit - but personally - and this is not like i'm judging anyone for sure - i also kinda don't get it from a "bigger" perspective, like why people are okay with killing animals. my religious community would say it's because God gave us dominion over the animals, but even as a christian that seemed kinda fucked to me? let alone now that i'm not haha. i think the food industry might just be too big to reverse it now but given how clearly it has devastating environmental consequences not to mention how much a lot of people love dogs, cats, etc, i'm not sure i fully grasp it, it seems like cognitive dissonance

I could give you my personal justification which isn't necessarily right or based on anything

a lot of animals are carnivores or omnivores so it's not like humans invented the concept of eating meat, but on the other hand I do think we eat too much of it, what with overfishing, and a lot of animals are mistreated
and also yeah total cognitive dissonance that when a culture eats cats or dogs we find it not okay, and it's not just based on cuteness because pigs and sheep are cute as hell but we have no problem eating them

Yeah I'm okay with it from a law of nature perspective. I don't feel bad at all that animals die for food, just because I believe that's how it's supposed to be. Doesn't mean I'm ok with them suffering or anything.

The deer overpopulation here hurts the vegetation and kills all the woody plants that are trying to grow. There are facts that support each side and it sucks sometimes.

yeah i get that to a degree but at the same time i wonder if we'll ever get to the point where the negatives outweigh the positives in individual minds bc i don't see a big change coming over the whole world haha. and rt i'm not judging anyone for eating meat, i still do it from time to time, i'm just not sure i can ever comfortably go back to regular, purposeful eating now

this is true too. again although i personally look at it from a base pacifist perspective i think it's a more practical question on a global/national level where you look at the results of the food industry going on steroids, so places where that's not as prominent (like a smaller, localized ecosystem) is a different story

i hope u get eaten by a pig, i will then pet that pig

Meat is too tasty for me to consider morally abstaining from consumption. That isn't to say the production chain shouldn't be the free for all cruelty fest that it seems to be.

I never really liked meat to begin with so it was pretty easy to cut out. Part of my angsty reasoning for cutting it out was cause my mom would make me sit at the table until I was done eating it, so it was a legit excuse not to have to. I honestly forgot what it tasted like years ago so I never crave it. It was harder at first because I think fewer places offered alternatives. Now I can find something to eat just about anywhere. It's not really a big part of my life tho. I don't really think about it, unless someone asks me over to dinner and I ask if there will be something I can eat and they insist there will be and IT'S ALWAYS A LIE
