I also need to catch up on a lot of movies, but I feel like I haven’t really seen one that I’ve been super passionate about. Last year I was gushing about Phantom Thread and A Ghost Story and this probably is the closest I’ve felt to that

I wasn’t expecting such obvious throwbacks to Winter’s Light. This really is just that movie for a modern audience but a little more on the nose. I liked it quite a bit; just surprised by the similarities and I’m not sure I agree with the amount of hype. Excellent acting though. Looking forward to watching it again.

Yeah I watched Winter Light a few months after this and was surprised how similar it was.

He pulls so much from that film and Bresson and Dreyer's work. It's so dope.

Thanks for bumping this thread and reminding me I can finally watch Winter Light and the rest of the trilogy on blu-ray in the new Bergman set. Mmmmmmmm.

Oooooh you’re in for a treat. Criterion just came out with a 39-film set in November for his 100th birthday. The first printing sold out but more are coming soon. It’s absolutely gorgeous.

Finally got to see this and thought it was very good, but I'll echo what some people have already said here and let that final 1/3 or 1/4 marinate and think on it.

I wanted to be floored by it but I definitely wasn’t and don’t think I’ll get there unless the ending resonates with me.

I would take like 90% of De Palma’s work over Schrader’s best film so
