If Mexico can get Brazil out, then this tournament becomes massively unpredictable. Well, more so than it already is.

 

Very interesting day yesterday. Spain deserved to go out. How can such a talented team have no Plan B? They just passed it so slowly and it was honestly irritating. No cutting edge, very few chances. Russia didn't even have to defend well. Terrible performance by Spain in all honesty.

In terms of Croatia vs Denmark, I thought Croatia were disappointing. I have a feeling they could go far in this tournament though.

Sadly I'm at work for Brazil vs Mexico today. I hope Mexico do something - it would be amazing to have Brazil go out as well!

But this occasion it was basically a guaranteed goal if the defender doesn’t foul him. Taken out on the 6yard line with no goalkeeper to score past.

If there was still a keeper in the way, I understand how a yellow would be fine, because it basically just puts the striker back in the same position, but with no defenders around. But last night he had an open goal before the foul, but the penalty puts the keeper back in with a chance to stop the goal?

 

I see what you mean, but the point of the rule is that a player can make a genuine attempt to play the ball and gets justly punished for it if he makes a mistake. If he goes in with a cynical attempt, he'll be sent off. To deal with the two situations you're suggesting, I think they'd have to have two different definitions of a goal scoring opportunity. I think, on the whole, the new rule is a bit better balanced. Short of just giving the attacking team the goal, I don't really know what the fair solution would be.

It's Neymar's reaction that makes me not like him at all. All that talent and that's what you do. It was a silly thing by the Mexican and he should have been sent off but it definitely didn't warrant the writhing around on the floor like a child. Petulant.

 

Please can Mexico score. I do not want Neymar to win this World Cup by diving and acting like a child.
