Just saw this and loved it, I was not into movies at all when Blackhat came out so I feel incredibly lucky to see a new Mann film in theaters

Really cannot imagine laughing at that scene. Certainly no one in my theater did

I thought a morning Christmas showing would be empty but there were too many people there. Someone burped when Cruz was silently welling up emotionally about her son. When the big crash happened, someone said "ohhhhhkayyyyy".

I have a very, very warped sense of humor and can find black comedy in a lot of things, but laughing at that scene is beyond imaginable for me.

Thought this was pretty great but firmly middle of the Mann pack for me, just thankful he's still getting the chance to make movies tho.

Cruz and Driver are fucking incredible though.

I wonder if the wrong son died line was a Walk Hard reference.

Cruz was great, Driver was mostly great, why was Shailene Woodley in this

Some great acting here but I left wondering why this story needed to be told.

  9. I don't know anything about racing history, so I wasn't expecting or anticipating the crash. That was a really shocking and effective sequence.

The rest of it didn't fully work for me. Cruz was very good. I was mixed on Driver's performance, and the accent work (on just about everyone's part) felt more distracting than anything else.

just got out and was my exact thought. still a solid time and good to see a Michael Mann feature on the big screen

What does that even mean? What decides whether or not a story should be told?

For me, I just didn’t really take away anything from the movie. Usually I can say “oh, there were some interesting themes here” or “this is what the movie was trying to say”. This just felt like a series of events in this man’s life, told with relative historical accuracy, and I’m not sure why a filmmaker or writer deemed it necessary to depict that story in 2023.

I mean I’m not saying this to be snarky, have you seen any of Mann’s other films?? There is a very consistent through line of professionals obsessed with mastery of their craft, separation (or inability to) of emotional and professional lives, reckoning with the uncontrollable, etc. He is not the type of filmmaker to be showy about his themes or spell it outright but it is all there

Honestly no, not really. I might have seen Last of the Mohicans at some point when I was younger but don’t remember much. Maybe he’s just not for me!

well I would definitely watch like, Heat or Collateral first before arriving at the conclusion he’s not for you

Heat and Collateral are in my top 3 for sure but I think Thief is a really, really special movie and his #1 for me.

really liked this. driver and cruz were fantastic, the scene where they were fighting about Dino's death was really something. the crash scene was was more brutal than i thought it would be. loved that dempsey was also randomly in this hah.

they gotta stop putting shailene in stuff though.

Loved this way more than expected, which I should've anticipated being from Mann. Driver is good yes, but yeah Cruz for sure steals the show. The crash scene was so jarring and brutal. Overall great film though.

Yeah, thought this was fine. Basically what everyone else said - some great performances, well crafted and directed. Story felt pretty dry. I think Woodley works in certain movies, but the only justification for her being in this is every other actress in the world was busy.

Pretty funny that this is the second Driver movie in a row where he plays a stoic character who only shows emotion in flashbacks with his kid. Also, when he has his big scene at the end with Cruz in the grey suit with his white hair, reminded me so much of Tom Cruise in “Collateral.”
