Not a huge shock but under spoilers anyway - JK confirmed on Twitter the timeline of the series is such that it'll end in 1945, aka we'll end on Dumbledore vs Grindelwald

    yeah good okay Prestigious

Wife and I loved it. As only a mild HP fan who only read the books in the past 1.5 years, I thought it was really well done and I loved Dan Fogler's character.

Just saw this, pretty fun for a former huge Potter nerd. I squealed a little bit when I saw the Niffler.

He had a small role because there are going to be more Fantastic Beasts movies.

Saw this last night. As a huge Harry Potter fan, I enjoyed it greatly. I'm sure part of me even enjoyed it more than the HP movies because there isn't really a novel to compare it too.

    I do not exist.

It was weird seeing a film in the Harry Potter universe where I didn't know what was going to happen.

Also, I'm really not a fan of Jonny Depp. I know he's not this film at all but I was sad when he was revealed and disappointed that he's going to be the main antagonist for this film series.

    Bringin the ruckus

One of the things I loved about the HP film series was how absolutely perfect every casting choice was so as much as I enjoyed Fantastic Beasts I couldn't help but be disappointed in some of the actors chosen to be in the film, mostly in regards to Depp and Voight. We finally have American actors being allowed in to the Harry Potter film universe and those two were chosen? Felt like a massive letdown in quality from the high bar set with Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Gary Oldman, etc.

The subplot of the romance between the No-mag and the blonde witch was handled so horribly.

    this movie was sloppy af

they start the movie with all the grindelwald headlines even though that is just barely a factor in this movie in particular, I get that he will be a bigger deal in the later movies but they should of made the first thing we see more establishing of what will happen in this movie rather than the next movies especially considering this is a new world and batch of characters essentially. also headlines are a pretty lazy way to establish that information. further on that point they did pretty much nothing to make the main protagonist actually seem like a person until like 30 minutes into the movie (when he goes into the case he finally began to feel like a character) being closed off and awkward is fine for a character but they should of shown us there was more than just that to him sooner.

Also could do without practically all the main characters falling in love with each other at the end, the big spinning wind of trash/magic/darkness that is in every god damn movie with a budget of 200 million or more, and just general fan service.

I didn't even hate the content of the movie, I think they tried to show a new side of the world that we hadn't seen. The repressed magic and the propaganda against magic and magical creatures could be a good road for them to go down further. I just think they got too caught up in making fans happy that they ended up not doing justice to their premise.

also, this movie was pretty much presented to us initially as fan service, so i'm just excited that they've made it into its own story at all.

But did they actually make it its own story? Or did they just use it to set up story of something we already know about from the books?

It was basically two separate stories that weren't connected at all: an evil dark wizard is looking for one of the most powerful young human beings in the world, hoping to manipulate his power and use it to take over the world, and then a nerd lost his animal friends.

True. Although using "story" for the second part is pretty generous.

i mean i wasn't bored or anything i just don't think it holds a candle to the original series, it's not even better than order of the pheonix.

It's just not that great. It's more good than bad, but there are some big issues for me. It just kind felt lacking, especially compared to much of the Harry Potter stuff.

It felt a lot like The Hobbit to me in a lot of ways.
