Honestly I was a very casual fan before the hiatus, so I don't really have an answer. I do remember telling this girl that FOB sucked and were complete sell outs after that album was released. I don't think I even listened to it, I was probably just copying what everyone else said to be ~cool~. In hindsight I'm totally on that girls side and she should have punched me then and there.

I think part of it is a by product of how the pop punk culture was dying at the time, which Pete alludes to in that article. The pop punk lifers were upset because FOB continued to stray from the TTYG sound (this is still happening today lol), but the mainstream FOB fans who should've been receptive to the album were busy revolting against all things emo, and no matter how much FOB adapted, they were the flagship of emo. They had to go down.

I hope someone writes a book one day. Truly the hiatus was the best possible move they could've made and the only reason we are all still sitting here 10 years later discussing them and anticipating a new album.

I feel like this Chicago thing is most likely going to be a twenty one pilots style tour of Chicago, and I'm already stressed as hell about it. I bet they'll play Subterranean, Metro, Riviera or Aragon, and then United Center. If true, I hope like hell I can get Subt tickets (or whatever the small venue ends up being).

 

Fob's hiatus feels like it completely changed history and the course of the world. It was like the deathblow to all relevance of early 2000s culture.

 

This reads so dramatically, but honestly is probably more true than people realize. I'm not sure it was really the cause of the change, but it was definitely the final nail in that coffin and truly was the end of an era. What massive emo hit can you name past 2008?

Shit this one just makes me feel real shame that I didn't think of it. Although truthfully other than the Only Exception, which I wouldn't really call emo in the vein we're talking about, was there a megahit on this? Ignorance was huge for sure, but not as ubiquitous as it would've been 2 years earlier. If I put Ignorance on at a party I'm going to get a lot of confused looks.

But are we saying emo really died with the departure of the Farro brothers?

 

That was always my favourite track, but I'm surprised they never released it as a single considering how hot Lil Wayne was at the time.

No yeah it's over the top but I'm saying that's what it FEELS like. There was a ton else going on at the time, but it's funny to see that reflected in the small part of culture music reflects. Thinking about Folie coming out on top of all those things makes my head spin.

 

The fact that Pete put AB/AP last on his ranking, along with me liking the new song, made my hype for the new one go up considerably

 

I fucking love Wilson oh my goodness. I am kinda drunk right now but this song is such a jam! I can only imagine it growing more and more on me. Wish I had this album right now
