Evil Dead Rise (Lee Cronin, April 21, 2023) Movie • Page 5

  1. Yeah, stuff like that is great - the wires in the elevator, too. Calling back to the tree scene, but just a really cool nod as opposed to a recreation or whatever. Obviously didn't love the two I mentioned, and felt somewhat similarly about the "swallow your soul" and "dead by dawn" lines, but those moments were also effective enough that I got over it pretty quickly. Just felt a little tiresome after like the fifth wink reference lol

2013 is just so, so gnarly. And memorable. The hypodermic needles. The nail gun. The turkey carver. The duct tape! The box cutter. Literal raining blood. The arm removal. That movie was cranked to 11, and this one is just a few notches below that. But still so fun!

My ranking would look something like this currently, but I love Army of Darkness so there are no losers here

Yeah, Evil Dead 2013 still remains on top for me. I'm with you on the fan service. I'd prefer to see them do something more creative/different

I feel as though they wasted the new location a bit - felt very limited and confined but ED in the city or at least in the entire cool as hotel would have been cool to explore.

I thought they did a great job making a small apartment feel really big. And I’m usually not one for a ton of references, but all of them felt like stuff fans would get, but wouldn’t feel intrusive or weird to newcomers.

My main complaint is that it relied a lot on things being loud…then….very…..quiet…THEN THEY’RE REALLY LOUD AGAIN. They went to that well a little too much. But that’s modern horror for ya.

I can't like, it all worked for me - even the consistent retreads. The chant of Dead by Dawn is still eerie and it landed. But I can definitely see the other side, especially with something like the eyeball.

I also found the location to be simple, but ultimately effective. I like how the elevator took the place of the trees (like Aaron mentioned), but I also liked the locked door kinda becoming a substitute for the hatch door. I thought that the gore was a bit more tame when compared to 2013 (fully expected the cheese grater to be much much worse), and I think I do prefer that movie to this one currently. I thought the performances here were much better by most of the cast than 2013 though.

  9. The locked door being the vertical hatch door was awesome

I also think this shows the difference between a major studio film and the stuff that Netflix makes. Like compare this to that shitty ghost David Harbour movie where everything looks greenscreened and fake (and probably cost like three times more), where everything in this looks so tactile and real. It makes all the difference in the world.

Are there other characters in the film other than the family in the apt? Evil Dead always worked for me in part due to the isolation the characters felt.

Yes, there are a few other people on the floor of their apartment building.

    they don’t last long

Yo….literally raining blood. 2013 slapped so hard. Loved the ramp of camp once the start the Bruce Campbell remake fake-out with the brother and it just was balls to wall from there

Very curious to find out the tone of Rise!

And I really like the idea that this comes out once every 10 years or show as a revamping of the formula in a new perspective. Really nails home the last line that the dead never truly stay dead. Make it an event, people will love that

Saw this last night too—so damn fun! ED ‘13 is my favorite of the franchise, but I love it all so like Aaron said above, there are no losers. This is absolutely my second favorite franchise, and this addition maintains that ranking.
