Recently I was able to catch up with synth/electronic artist, Erev, to discuss everything that went into his new single called “Sandbar.” Erev is the project of songwriter and composer, Matthew David Olerio. Besides chatting about the new single, I also asked Erev about what the future has in store for this project.

What inspired the creation of “Sandbar”? Are there any personal experiences or stories behind the song?

Sonically, “Sandbar” is inspired by campy, Euro-balearic tones and ubiquitous reggaeton rhythms. It was fun pushing these worlds together to see what would happen. I try to spend as much free time by the ocean as possible and have always been fascinated with sandbars. They’re these temporary accumulations of sand that are always shifting and never the same. I wanted the song to mirror this – weaving in and out. It’s become a palate cleanser for me in a year filled with some big life changes; a reminder to stay open and move with lightness through it all.

What kind of visual style or aesthetic did you aim for in the video? Are there any specific influences or inspirations?

My buddy Tom Van Buskirk made the video. We wanted to dig into the idea of a sandbar being a portal of sorts – these changes shooting you out into the abyss. Visually, we wanted to speak to the otherworldly nature and mystery of the ocean in a dream-like state. We’re all constantly exploring the unknown and have to work with it whether we like it or not. Why not enjoy the ride!

How does this project set the stage for your future work? Are there any new directions you’re excited to explore?

This is the first of several Erev tracks that will be released over the next few months. “Sandbar” was a catalyst to write more rhythmic, balearic leaning songs. It’s been a liberating template to work with and has shown me how to have fun again writing songs. Not confining Erev to a specific genre or style has also been a healthy exercise – I’m interested to see how it influences the next body of work.
