also, people continue to lambast bands for selling out when they make major label music that sucks. the eternals sucked. people are going to be bummed about it.

Probably wishful thinking but it also can't hurt. Kind of like how a lot of changes in the fast food industry don't get made until McDonald's gets enough public pressure that they're forced to do it first.

I would be bummed if a director I liked completely switched into the Disney/MCU path. It would mean I wouldn’t watch any more of their films

 

It's pretty much impossible for indie film makers to survive without making a deal with some devil ,but I would also never assume people don't want to make marvel movies

 

i mean, this isn’t really the case. i actually “liked” eternals more than each of edgar wright’s last two movies. but i respect that he has continued to make “his” movies outside of the big studio system. he certainly isn’t hurting for money, either.

 

I think it is safe to say Zhao, or any filmmaker as a child, never dreamed of being a cog in the Disney machine. They wanted to make the next Godfather or Psycho or Jaws or The Shining or Goodfellas or Jurassic Park or Pulp Fiction or any other number of classic films. If they wanted to make Star Wars, they wanted to make their own world that they can control, not color inside the lines so you don't get fired or replaced, or perhaps worse have the sequel undo any controversial decision you make.

 

Focus is universal though, but I don't know if they just handle distribution

 

i would equate focus to touchstone/searchlight/etc. in this sense.

 

judging off 2/3rds of her films, she pretty clearly wanted to make the next Days of Heaven or Tree of Life. not star wars 10 lol.

Why don't we not assume what Chloe Zhao did or didn't want to do with her career, considering nobody here speaks for her lol

...because she has allegedly signed on to do a Star Wars movie. Why would she do that unless she wanted to do it for one reason or another. She's not being forced at gunpoint to make a Star Wars movie is she.

 

I’m gonna echo a piece I shared re: Disney hiring a non-white, non-male director once every 15 films: if representation in cinema is what you want, don’t wait for Disney to hire more diverse directors, watch the many movies that come from all over the world and United States all year from non-white men

And she was good at making them. It wasn't like she just did them to get her foot in the door to make the jump to blockbuster world.

 

I mean, Chloé Zhao has talked about being a big Star Wars fan, as well as a fan of Marvel, BR2049, Dune, Man of Steel, One Punch Man, and all sorts of other things. It’s possible to like a variety of things.

Obviously that’s not all that goes into how one navigates their career. There’s also the dissuading factor of creative limitations and the strong persuading factor of $$$$$$$$$$. A ton goes into that calculus. But, it’s silly to think someone who loves Malick and is good at that style couldn’t genuinely find working in other contexts satisfying in its own way.

More and more, I don’t personally wish a Disney tentpole movie on my favorite directors, lol. But, if she gets better at playing in that system, and she’s not pulled so deep into it for us to lose more stuff like The Rider from her, then I dunno, good for her I guess?
