I’ve seen about half of Coppola’s movies and I’ve never felt strongly about any of them

ahhhh yeah that’s easily her weakest. Forgot about it to be honest. Old Joy, Wendy & Lucy, Meek’s Cutoff, Certain Women, First Cow, and even River of Grass stand out so much that she always comes to mind

There are a lot of directors who have made mediocre films but not necessarily bad films. Paul Thomas Anderson (Hard Eight), Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight), Wes Anderson (pretty much everything after the Royal Tenenbaums), Terrence Malick (A Voyage in Time). Stanley Kubrick disowned Fear and Desire, but it is a really rough watch. If I ever meet Martin Scorsese I am going to demand that he answer for Shutter Island. Richard Linklater and Steven Soderbergh are examples of filmmakers who manage to hit some of the highest highs and the lowest lows

Kenneth Lonergan has made three masterpieces in three attempts. While it is risky to start crowning people with such a low number (look at what happened to Jeff Nichols), but he has shown an incredible ability to capture the depths of human tragedy and pain. He has only made three films in 20 years, partly because of studio interference, so maybe he will sour eventually.

I was going to call it bad but there are a few interesting scenes.

Part 1 is better than Part 2, but both were very compelling.

Just saw they are both on Criterion so I'm probably gonna watch those tonight to avoid following the election results

I thought Once Upon A Time... actually sucked. I fell asleep twice trying to watch it across two different nights. Maybe I need to revisit it, but I felt like it was his worst

That is the worst take. Once Upon a Time is fantastic.

I also thought OUATIH dragged, and wasn’t nearly as funny as some people seemed to think. The little actor girl, the ranch scene, and the last ~20min were all fantastic tho

How come? Like I said, it’s one of those I would probably be more sympathetic towards if made by a lesser director
