The newest review was probably the worst thing they have done. It takes over an hour to even talk about the film and not more conversation about the prequels.

"Chef" is easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen (wasn't my idea to watch it)

Should I see Deepwater Horizon or Sully tonight? Or neither.

    A DILAPIDATED BOAT! Prestigious

Top 5 rated new Fall network series so far.
    1. Bull (CBS) 18.4
    2. Designated Survivor (ABC) 14.4
    3. This is Us (NBC) 13.1
    4. Kevin Can Wait (CBS) 12.9
    5. MacGyver (CBS) 11.3
I dig This is Us and Designated Survivor so far. Have no interest in watching any of the CBS series.

Designated Survivor and McGyver are the biggest standalone successes though, as Bull, This is Us, and Kevin Can Wait all benefit from leading in or following hugely popular shows. Designated Survivor's pilot episode actually scored better ratings than it's lead in Black-ish.

I'm watching The Usual Suspects for the first time right now and this is the only place I felt I could post about it. It's fucking great so far.

Anyone going to Anthony Bourdain's upcoming book tour? LA doesn't have many seats left so I'm thinking about heading to Denver for it.

  12. Finished Fargo season 1. I enjoyed the dark humor of it all, every episode was solid, and performances from all four leads were great. I guess my only gripe is how they handled the one token Asian character. I hope I'm not missing out on too much from having not watched the movie.

Not too much other than some fun references and where that money came from. If you enjoyed the show you should watch the movie though because you'll probably love that too. The second season is at least as good.

I honestly thought the second season was somehow even better.

  16. Finished Penny Dreadful season 2. Wow. I am so in love with this show. I loved it from the very first episode of the first season, and it's only gotten better and better. Almost everything about it is flawless, from the writing and acting to the cinematography and music. It's sad that sometimes even the best shows can have trouble dealing with black and trans characters. Anyway, I only wish I was more familiar with the source materials, the classic works of fiction the show draws from for some of its characters, but I feel like the show's reimaginings are so, what's the word, intriguing and well-thought-out that the knowledge of, what's that other word, pre-existing materials probably wouldn't affect my already very high appreciation for the show very much. (My mind is blanking on vocabulary--I blame tonight's debate.) Out of the six shows I'm streaming/catching up on (the others being Fargo, The West Wing, House of Cards, Homeland, and Mad Men), I enjoy Penny Dreadful the most so far, but I think it's more of a genre preference thing. I love love love this dark fantasy world it's created, and all of the characters are so well written.

Watched One Mississippi and Fleabag on Amazon. Both 6 episodes each, quick and easy to binge. REALLY liked One Mississippi... was already familiar with Tig Notaro's story, but the show was still great. Fleabag was solid... probably a bad comparison but its like You're The Worst mixed with Girls.

Watched In Treatment season 1... when I got into it I did not realize it was 43 episodes LOL. Was good though... a little uneven, but the Sophie episodes were top notch. Starting on season 2 now.

Watched Veep seasons 1-5. JLD is an amazing comedy actress, the rest of the cast are great too but to me she carries that show. Would probably be a funnier show if real life politics weren't so ridiculous at the moment though. Still very funny though.

Not sure what I'm going to watch next, have a huge list of both old and new stuff that I still need to check out. It's kind of overwhelming lol.

  19. Just watched Homeland S1E11, aka "oh so that's why she always gets nominated."

Will post about the full season when I finish E12.

  20. Homeland S1 (I'm lazy so I'll just spoiler-tag everything) I didn't expect it to go the anticlimactic route, with Brody not bombing the place, but I guess that's the smarter way to go in the long run narratively, and it just cements the idea that this isn't a show about acts of terrorism, but about the people who commit terrorism, and the people who prevent it. Carrie and Brody are in very interesting places right now moving forward into the next season. I'm glad that Brody and Nazir's relationship will remain a presence in the series even if it may decide to go onto a different seasonal "big bad," for lack of a better word. Claire Danes is amazing throughout, especially when Carrie is going through her more extreme mood swings in those last two episodes. She's the standout, of course, but the rest of the main cast is solid, even Morgan Saylor, who plays Dana. That scene when she's on the phone with Brody is so intense. I guess a recurrent theme here re: Carrie is people won't believe you if they think you're crazy, even when you're right, but I think a possible extension of that is people won't believe you when you're a woman. Watching everyone fail her at her most vulnerable was very tough to watch. The show's a slow burn for sure (is that the right word? look at me being not sure), and in a sense it still hasn't really exploded yet, but oh man some moments here and there are just absolutely stellar.

So I finally watched In Bruges last night. I feel like a dipshit for waiting so long to watch it. It was So funny and I didn't really expect the film to move me but I thought the ending was beautiful.
