Deleted now but someone posted something stating the changes don't go into effect until 2020 but I did some digging and... that's not true lol

It's just that the date for the ceremony has been moved up for 2020

I don't think it's 1000% in response to JUST Black Panther

There have been calls for the Oscars to be "more representative of the average movie-goer" ever since nerds got pissed that The Dark Knight wasn't nominated

The academy attempted to respond by upping the number of nominees, but that hasn't exactly had the intended effect

Sure, Black Panther's certainly a factor, but I think a large body of the older academy membership probably wanted to initiate something like this in response to Get Out, a movie many older members thought was too genre to be considered an "oscar" movie.

Also I don't think it's out of the question for Black Panther to receive a BP nomination anyway.

TLDR; This is all pretty meaningless and dumb but I don't think it's all because of Black Panther

 

I have gone from “Black panther will absolutely get a BP nom” to “I’d be shocked if black panther got a best picture nom.” More than enough people will be of the mindset that panther belongs in that category, plenty to ensure it doesn’t end up in Best Picture.

If anything, there should be less separation of films. Documentaries and foreign and animated films should not have a separate category as if they are unworthy.

Where does it end? Comedies don't get nominated; why not best comedy?

 

Totally agree on this. I can't for the life of me figure out why people don't consider documentaries films.

 

Best popular picture or whatever it's called seems dumb.

 

Why haven't I ever heard anyone talking about Into the Badlands? I've known about it for a while because it has an Asian lead, but I never checked it out. It's not, like, flawlessly executed television, but it's damn good fun. I started it on Sunday finished the second season yesterday, it's so addicting.

 

It's on my list to check out.

 

Something I had not thought about but someone mentioned; does this make an Oscar voter less likely to vote for a successful film for Best Picture because of the new category? Something like a Pixar film, where people voted for it in the past, can be relegated to the other category so they can vote for another boring stuffy British period drama.

 

Also, would it be a separate list of movies from the Best Picture noms? Where would a film like Get Out get placed?

 

I haven't seen season 2 yet but loved season 1. The lore of the show seems like it'll be fun to explore, I'm hoping season 2 does a lot of that.

 

Is there a legitimate way to stream recent episodes of AMC or FX without a cable provider? Or, like, pay for just AMC and FX without a bundle of 25+ other channels I'm not interested in? I briefly looked into Sling and Roku, etc.; I don't want to pay for channels I won't watch.

I mean, yeah, between Netflix and Hulu there's enough to watch that I could wait for S3 of Into the Badlands to show up on Netflix, but if an option is out there that's cheaper than, ionno, paying for the season on Amazon Prime, I wanna know about it.

Mac and Me is out on blu-ray as of this week, just sayin...

 

Ya know, my friends and I got super drunk last year and watched Mac and Me and I gotta say...it’s bad, and is mostly a macdonalds commercial, but there are actually some redeeming qualities about it. The production value is fairly high for a piece of shit rip off and the music is actually pretty damn good.

 

I’m more of a McGee and Me! fan.
