Watching Tropic Thunder for the first time.

 

Finally, people have a reason to fuck their dune buckets at the theater again

 

Sounds like a big germ fest.

 

As I say that, I realized my theater is worse in that regard haha

They have a popcorn deal where you buy a bucket for like $15 and you can bring it back each visit and fill it up for $5. It’s a pretty big bucket. But you know some people are not cleaning them well if at all.

 

Does it hold up on a first watch in 2025?

 

I remember being disappointed by Tropic Thunder when it came out. It had some great moments, but I’ve been surprised at its continued cultural relevance.

 

It had its funny parts, but it felt a little long. I had always heard people talk so much about the Cruise scenes, but they were nothing special.

 

Cruise scenes were just surprising because no one knew he was in the movie.

 

Honestly once Coogan’s character exits it loses a bit of steam

 

The entire filmed battle at the beginning is the best part. It is played just straight enough that it looks like a real movie until it starts to unravel.

 

Just watched Tropic Thunder. Fucking great.

 

In August 2008 you could go to the movie theater and choose between Tropic Thunder, The Dark Knight, Pineapple Express, Step Brothers, or WALL-E.

 

The current state of comedy movies is so sad. I made a bunch of lists on letterboxd of my favorite movies each year going back to 2006 so far and my first few were stacked with comedies like those. I mean fuck, 08 also had Semi-Pro, Role Models, Yes Man, Zack & Miri, Harold & Kumar sequel, Baby Mama, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Rocker, Be Kind Rewind. Years surrounding that are also stacked with classics. A decade later in 2018 the only kinda memorable one I saw was Game Night. And looking at last year I only had Snack Shack on my favorites list, and that one is a more of a slice of life like Dazed & Confused.
