The second studio album from Eliza & The Delusionals is a stunning collection of songs that play off of each other brilliantly and put emphasis on the songwriting improvements from the band. Make It Feel Like The Garden was produced by Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy, Amy Shark) and lead singer Eliza Klatt shared, “It was interesting to see how working in a different part of the world, outside of the comfort of our home studio and Australia in general, has influenced our writing and the process of demoing the songs. Recording the album with Oscar Dawson was an incredibly collaborative experience. He continued to push us out of our comfort zones which led us to feeling really free creatively. I think this also made us write in our most honest and genuine form.” The album is built around several different flowery interludes, including “Iris,” “Marigold,” “Dahlia,” “Arabella,” and lastly “Violet” that help set the stage for the music that comes flowing after. By creating an authentic record that plays into a sound similar to bands like The Aces, Wolf Alice, and The 1975, Eliza & The Delusionals prove that they are here to stay.

After a brief atmospheric intro song called “Coming To An End,” the band invites the listener into this picturesque new world they have created with the vibrant title track. “Make It Feel Like The Garden” starts off a bit cautiously, while later adding in some shimmering guitars and a tempo change on the chorus. “She Sits Up So High” follows the nice one-two punch of the introductory songs with a steady pick-me-up beat and a shiny chorus similar to the artist, Beabadoobee, whom the band recently toured with.

The sunny single, “Falling For You” is about falling head over heels in love, whether you’re ready for it or not, and features a well-placed saxophone solo to bring a full wall of sound into the band’s arsenal. “Another You” works well in the middle of the tracklisting by bringing the tempo down for a moment while putting emphasis on Eliza’s vocals before adding in another tempo change after the first verse to get back to band’s most comfortable speed. “Hurts” is a piano-laced ballad that puts the spotlight on Eliza’s headspace as she sings in a falsetto early on, while guitarist Kurt Skuse layers her vocals with some well-placed riffs.

The back half opens with “I Wanna Love You” that feels richly influenced by bands like The 1975, while still feeling authentic to the sound that Eliza & The Delusionals were going for on their sophomore album. It’s a rich-sounding anthem about wanting to spend all of your days with that person that makes you feel complete and at home. My personal favorite in the set comes in the form of “Lately,” that features some harmonized vocals from Silversun Pickups’ Brian Aubert, and the band’s ability to complement the two vocalists with heavier-sounding guitar riffs truly needs to be heard to be believed. Things continue to accelerate down the rabbit hole with “Everything That Isn’t Mine” and the summery anthem of “Will She Know Today.”

Other late standouts like “Somebody” and “Madison” showcase the band’s improvements in rounding out their already dynamic sound that they introduced on 2022’s Now and Then. Eliza & The Delusionals have quickly cemented themselves as one of the most promising young bands in the music scene, while their artistic growth continues to blossom much like the lush garden on the cover art.
