    gold lol

I think people forget RTD basically trained Chibnall for the role by letting him run Torchwood s2

One thing that really struck me about Ncuti and which he sold so well is that he does really seem like an older, wiser, more experienced Doctor right from the get. The way he comforted 14 and how he handled the Tardis to be specific. He's going to own this role and could go down as one of the greats is my gut feeling.

Children of Earth is still so fucking great. RTD's masterpiece and one of the best broadcast stories in the DWU

Gotta hand it to him, i had my doubts, but NPH cooked this episode. Been thinking of “WELL THATS ALRIGHT THEN” a lot lol

I was trying to describe myself to someone

After feeling the first special was a bit all over the place, I really enjoyed the second and third installments, which is pretty remarkable, given that I'm allergic to Tate. Although, that game of catch was absolutely ridiculous. :crylaugh:

Gatwa looks like he could be an absolute beast in this role. Was also nice to see them trying to pretend Bristol is Camden (unless I missed the Tardis move between the end of 2 and the start of 3).

With the nods to the master, I hope they get someone who can match up with Gatwa. I loved Michelle Gomez chewing it up during her run in the show. I'm unsure if anyone will ever top her for me.

I’ve been rewatching Smith’s era of the show because I’ve had negative feelings about it for awhile. Season 6 has more good episodes than I remember. I think I have Pond fatigue by the end of it, and much of the plot is still hard for me to follow. Season 7 i still think is pretty irredeemable lol god, i wish they just introduced Clara in season 8. The “Impossible Girl” plotline is maybe my least favorite season arc in the show.

Very fun ep. Fluffy, the way the holiday eps always are, but fun - feel like Ncuti is every bit as good as anticipated, we already know more about Ruby than any companion in the Chibs era while still leaving room for mystery, and have a new character to speculate about (Mrs. Flood). Plenty corny, but still - feels like the show is back.

I thought it was okay, about the median for RTD's Christmas stuff. on the plus side, Ncuti is incredible and his chemistry with Millie seems absolutely effortless. I'm loving 15's emotional honesty and how deeply he was affected by the adoptive mother scene, although I'm a little bummed we seem to have skipped the whole "new Doctor gets to know themselves" phase. I tend to think that's way too important to just breeze past, but anything's better than spending the whole episode in bed I guess lol

the goblins were fine, I'm not against the more fantasy direction things seem to be going at all, stuff like the rope language was actually really cool. some real George Lucas' prequel vibes from the goblin song though, that was... not good

I feel like i agree, but I’m just deciding to view it as akin to the reset with Eccleston’s first ep. We’re catching the doctor after all that following a period of living alone (as 15 alluded to himself in this ep).

the goblin song thing was goofy, but the children’s show element is ratcheted up during the Christmas special so I’m *hoping* it won’t be so prevalent most of the time.

Had a lot of fun with this one. Really loved 15 and Ruby’s chemistry together. They both have that quality where I’ll be happy to watch bad episodes because they have so much charisma.

I'm def not against this show being goofy, it's a part of the DNA for sure but that song was over the line lmao. first time in a while I've been glad I watched the show by myself, I felt borderline embarrassed watching it lmao

I guess RTD has never really done the new Doctor thing which is a shame. the only time he ever wrote the immediate aftermath he kept 10 in bed for an hour, every other regeneration he's started a while after. it might be more accessible to newcomers that way, which is clearly the intention of this whole new season 1 reboot but I can't say I'm a fan. give me Moffat’s messy regenerations any day

The Goblin song part was absolute garbage but I'm not surprised because it's RTD we're talking about here. He's not good at being funny. And stuff like that is just another feather in the cap of the man who gave us Jesus Fairy Pixie Doctor. Just nonsense.

Overall though, I think it was sort of okay and didn't outright hate it. I liked how Gatwa's Doctor is overtly kind. Seems like he really understands people. Ruby is very charming, much more than Rose ever was. But I think this episode just confirmed to me that my love for the show probably won't ever return. Stuff like The Timeless Children and Bigeneration were needless complications for a character who didn't need it. So it's always going to be difficult for me to take the show seriously again. But as much as I've always disliked RTD's writing, I thought his character work here was pretty solid. I might keep watching for a few episodes just to see how it goes.

If we get more stuff like the Goblin song, I'm checking out entirely. lol

I just binged all four specials. “Spring 2024” is too long to wait! I love Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor so far.

So glad to see I’m not the only one who thought the goblin song was embarrassing.

I’ve always enjoyed a good amount of camp in this show but there’s a line, and that scene bolted right across it.

    …Decent episode otherwise though.

I've decided to try reading the VNAs and EDAs finally. got pdfs of them all through... sources, although I do have the first four in hardcopy, but they're a pretty rough read lmao. banking on it getting a bit better before I'm 100 books in lmao

Yeah, it’s weird they report she is being “recast”. Like, unless this woman is playing the same character, I don’t think that language is appropriate.

One season companions are pretty normal, might just be a creative decision.

A one-season companion can be perfectly fine. Bill rocks.
