I've been a HUGE Deftones fan since the beginning, but outside of a few tracks, Gore never really clicked with me for some reason.

 

True story: the only Deftones song I know is Change because they used it in the Dragon Ball Z movie Cooler's Revenge.

 

I was unaware of Change being in that movie. Just looked up the rest of the soundtrack. This has to be the only movie to include 3 Drowning Pool songs not named Bodies (Reminded/Mute/Told You So).

 

Haha wow, I had no idea. If memory serves, Change is played as Goku goes Super Saiyan, and it was about the most epic combo ever when I was 11.

 

Yeah, there was 2 DBZ movies that used rock music. A lot of Disturbed and Drowning Pool lol. Using Change as Goku is transforming was actually really well done though.

I had no idea the band didn't like Gore, that's a bummer because I'd place it in their top 3. Strange how you can spend so long writing and recording something and end up not liking it so soon after release.

 

Ah...Change! I get it haha. Change was actually the first song I've heard from Deftones too. I think they played it on Letterman and my mind was blown.

 

Literally just bought the Cooler movie two pack on Amazon now after confirming they kept the licensed songs lol

Sorry, that's what I meant. I literally heard about that for the first time minutes ago when reading DeathCo's post.

 

Ah ok, no worries. Then again, if the entire band disliked Gore, it would make sense that only Phantom Bride is played live. I know Chino has a hard time doing the songs live and he's very hit or miss from what people have said (I've only seen them once and he was incredible). I feel the screaming parts in songs better suit him than the cleans. The band should really lean more on Sergio for cleans. From his background vocals, I think he could hit those notes.

 

Stephen hasn't actually said he dislikes it. Only that he had a hard time getting into it.

There's only two songs on Gore they haven't played live.

That whole situation was odd. I do apologize for saying he dislikes it. You are correct about him having a hard time getting into it. I think the articles where Chino saying he was the odd man out and then saying Stephen just had a hard time getting into it just confused things even more. I think it's just click baited articles that a lot of people fell for haha

 

There's interviews with Stephen where he explains how difficult it was for him to get into it. I'm sure he still doesnt like it that much considering his more aggressive/metal leanings. I know a good deal of Gore was written mostly by Chino, Abe, and Sergio in the early stages.

On their summer tour last year, Gore was pretty buried in the setlist compared to everything else they played at my date: five from ATF, and four from WP amd DE each. You'd think on a tour in support of the album that they'd play more than three songs from it (Acid Hologram, LMIRL, Gore) but oh well. It was still a fantastic show and they played tight and it was an awesome time finally getting to see them for my first time, but I've been paying attention to their setlists since Gore has been released and I'm pretty sure they've never played more than three songs from it on any given night

 

There were A LOT of live videos of Chino completely off key especially the Carolina Rebellion live feed from last year.

 

Trust me when I say that there aren't all that many people who know more about Deftones live history than me.

Chino nowadays doesn't really have problems hitting notes. It's usually only when he's drunk/not concentrating that he flats out. Other than that, his voice is in good shape. Even the odd bad Chino performance nowadays (like the video you posted) still sounds better than Sergio, who already does too much singing live (I mean, he sounds horrendous in the Change performance in that video). Arguing that Chino, one of the best rock vocalists of the last twenty five years, who has achieved a very, very high level of respect within rock music for what he does with his voice... shouldn't be singing as much as his bassist is odd.

And it's not even slightly true that Chino's better suited to screaming than cleans.

 

Listen, all I'm going to say of the matter is when Chino and Sergio tackle the "guns, razors, knives" part in Rocket Skates, it shakes me to my very core. I love the way they deliver that section live now

 

Like I said earlier in the thread, I only saw them once on the Koi No Yokan tour and he was phenomenal. I've had numerous friends see them over 10 times throughout the country say he's off more than he's on. On studio recordings, he's absolutely incredible with minimal effects. I don't think anyone can deny that. Live, however, might be a different animal. That performance of Change was just awful by both Sergio and Chino. I'm not saying Sergio should do all of the clean singing but it does seem like Chino needs some help.

 

can we stop saying Steph doesn't like Gore at this point? Idk how many times Chino has to refute that in an interview for people to get it. he didn't hate the record at all, it just happens that he wants everything to sound as big and heavy as possible, and that Chino prefers the prettier stuff. that was all it was, a push and pull, just like always. that duality is kinda what makes them great.

 

I mean, yeah I get that, but I'm sure Stephen's lack on interest compared to Chino's is why they don't play much from that album live. I'm sure Stephen has warmed up to the album, but I'd be willing to be he prefers most of Deftones' discography over it still.

 

Chino rarely needs help live other than odd backing up stuff and the dual vocal parts that Chi used to do. Picking out an off performance doesn't change that.

Chino's on form way, way more often than not nowadays. I've seen them twice in the last year and he was outstanding both times, especially a month ago. His live vocal inconsistencies largely originated around the White Pony touring cycle because he was consistently off his face on alcohol or drugs, and ended up shredding his voice to bits and paralysing a vocal cord. Continual drug use and weight gain really damaged his throat for the next few years, hence he got a reputation for being very on and off. After Chi's accident, he started tightening up on his performances and other habits, to the point where nowadays he's largely great again (and he was always a great frontman). Bar some drunken festival performances and the odd off show where he's running around too much, jumping off speakers and shit instead of concentrating on nailing his vocals, he's an amazing live performer.

 

Well, I'm glad he's doing a lot better! He's been through a lot in his career so to be going this long and becoming more popular, I respect that.

 

And even that musical split isn't entirely representative of either of them. Stef wrote Mascara and Entombed and his favorite band is Depeche Mode.

Probably, although I get the impression that Chino tends to be the one that decides what they do live.

 

for sure. they both have eclectic tastes to say the least. had no idea he wrote Entombed tho. that kinda blows my mind. very cool
