I thought it was doing well internationally but just not domestically?

 

I believe it under performed internationally as well. I think it was projected to do $150mil, but landed around $120.

 

How bad would this have to do to affect New Mutants' release?

I've mostly found the talk of that film being shelved kinda silly. With how big it is, & how far done, it'd be better to just put it out w/out over spending on marketing & seeing what happens. But, with the talk of still doing more reshoots... They gotta be thinking about how to minimize their losses on that one. (Maybe that April 2020 date they recently announced is a bad idea?)

I'd still like to see them shoot a post credits scene for New Mutants featuring a bunch of actors from previous X-Men films as one final farewell. Dark Phoenix really felt like it was always intended as the end of the First Class series, but I still want one more DOFP or Logan style tribute to the Fox Marvel era. (Heck, maybe even throw a Fantastic Four actor in there, lol.)

 

I was going to watch Apocalypse tonight before seeing this because I've watched First Class and Days of Future Past recently (hadn't seen them before), but I've heard only bad things about this movie and just saw its 2.5 hours long....debating whether it's worth it or not.

 

First Class and Days of Future Past are so damn good.

 

Skip Apocalypse.

Dark Phoenix continues the status quo from it in some ways, but not in any way that you need to watch it for. And, it ignores enough from Apocalypse that, if you did watch it first, you'd honestly probably just be more confused. The only thing you should know is that, over the course of that film, Mystique decided to join the X-Men as a team leader, & the world is pretty cool w/ mutants now.

In a way, Dark Phoenix connects to First Class more than any other X-Men film. The central character is Jean, but they also use her story to bring the First Class era to a close.

The first 20 seconds of this about sums up Apocalypse for me.

The mishandling of Storm is very high in my list of complaints about this film, which this clip reminded me of. Though, when she told Apocalypse that you can't kill people when saving the world, all I could think is... How dope would it be if, instead of Apocalypse, we got a whole E.T. story (w/ a dash of Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy) about Ororo & her pet Apocalypse?

 

This was very bad. I don't know if it was worse than Apocalypse. I couldn't even finish Apocalypse. I finished this. I'm not sure if that means anything or not...

The only positive I can muster up about this movie is that the actors are all distractingly attractive people and they are nice to look at.

It really shouldn't be this hard to make a good X-Men movie. And I know it is sort of cliche at this point, but it is getting really fucking old watching people like Simon Kinberg repeatedly fail upwards and just continue to be gifted with opportunity after opportunity despite fucking so many up.

 

apocalypse was at least campy. this is bad and it’s made worse by how self-serious it is.

 

I got some good unintentional laughs out of how serious Fassbender was when he was trying commandeer the helicopter with his hands.

 

There were parts of Apocalypse that were so awful and so terribly done that I can vividly remember checking out of whatever stupid shit was happening on screen and marveling at how so much money could just be snorted away and wasted on something so terrible. I remember being SO EMBARRASSED for Oscar Isaac in that stupid costume. I don't care if they paid him $100 million, it wasn't enough.

Also, I thought it was hysterical but also sad that Bryan Singer would have been handed such a high budget again after blowing almost $200 million dollars on one of the ugliest and shittiest looking movies I have ever seen in my entire life, Jack The Giant Slayer.

"We Were Wrong": Behind Fox's 'Dark Phoenix' Debacle

This claims that James Cameron himself forced the studio to move Dark Phoenix into the summer to make space for Alita. I do wonder how this would've done had it come out in February, assuming it would've been ready by then after the reshoots.

To repeat what I said yesterday, maybe they should move New Mutants into a different slot. Though, now they have to fit into Disney's release schedule, so that might be hard.

It would've been far worse with any other actor. His emotional moment regarding someone's death once again proves how much he owned this character. It's too bad he won't get the longevity that Jackman had with Wolverine.

 

The home media release (in September) is being rebranded as "X-Men: Dark Phoenix." Which, makes sense; gotta hope some less plugged in people see the "X-Men" name & give it a shot.

Anyways, as one of five fans of this movie in the world, I will be interested in the deleted scenes, making of documentary, & audio commentary. A month & a half after this messy little film came out, I'm still kinda fascinated by it. Honestly enjoyed more about it than I did Spider-Man: Far From Home, but I type this w/ an ASM2 avatar, so screw me, lol.

Also, stumbled upon this interview w/ Simon Kinberg from right after the film came out. Enjoyed hearing his perspective, glad he was happy to not divert blame for the flop & still personally happy w/ his film. Just wish he weren't quite so diplomatic when Singer came up.

 

I still don't think this movie is as bad as people made it out to be. Kinda think a lot of people just wanted this franchise to be over so the X-Men could join the MCU, and I'm sure the first MCU X-Men movie will be the crowned the best X-Men movie and will be the "ultimate proof" that Fox can't make a good Marvel movie

 

I liked this more than Spider-Man Far From Home and Shazam this year. The flop is understandable but I’ve yet to read a review of this movie that really captures the sentiment behind the hatred it got. (And FWIW I really doubt most of the people saying it was a bad Phoenix Saga adaptation care about the comics. No one was splitting hairs over Infinity War as an Infinity Gauntlet adaptation.)

 

I'm just now seeing the numbers for this. Holy shit it bombed. These numbers are unreal. THE WOLVERINE did double its box office.

Budget is listed at $200 million, but that can't even be close to the actual with reshoots and marketing.

 

Never ended up watching this, even though I wanted to. Those domestic numbers are sad.

 

I chalk it to the terrible buzz (I didn't like it, but I know others did), but Disney is also to blame. They admitted they fired all of Fox's PR people, so they handed it off to people less familiar with it and didn't give it a very big push. So I think it's a combo of poor buzz and Disney not giving a shit about Fox's movies now that they have the IP.

 

Even if Fox wasn’t bought out by Disney, I don’t think this movie would have been successful due to the poor reception of Apocalypse, plus this movie critically bombing even more, was bound to keep people away. The numerous delays didn’t help either.

 

It’s a shame because the X-Men movies are my favorite out of all the comic book movies. There’s plenty of bad ones but the best ones are amazing.
