it’s so funny when people try to do whataboutism and list bands way better than the band in question

 

Yeah I'd say its broke, they've been stale for like 4/5 albums now even if I ignore how much I disliked Tillian's voice. The new songs sound like more of the same with a slightly better vocalist. I'd rather just listen to Eidola.

 

Their albums felt distinctively different from each other up until Mothership. I feel like the latter, especially with its longer runtime, was them squeezing the last drop of creative juice out of their core sound. Everything they've done since has sounded like DGD on autopilot.

I actually find those two songs to be better than I expected on the instrumental front. Eidola dude sounds Jonny Craig on DBM2 levels of bored on the second one though and their discography remains tainted for me anyway.

I think the songs sound decent. If a new band came out with these musically and vocally it'd be super hyped. People are just down on them overall and sonically they don't feel that new for the band,

 

These singles definitely still sound akin to the Tilian era stuff, but for me I’m okay with that because I enjoyed Tilian era DGD but can’t really stomach listening to Tilian’s voice much (if at all) at this point.

 

yes if the songs were released in an entirely different context people would receive them differently how is that a novel concept? this isn’t hypothetical land this is the real world where dgd released these songs and they’re super weak.

 

Mothership is the last great full album. Artificial selection comes close but it has such a fucking terrible middle section it’s insane. Afterburner is just boring as sin outside of maybe 3 or 4 tracks and jackpot juicer has a strong front half and a borderline unlistenable second half. Mothership was the last one I could listen to all the way through.

 

if they were a new band I would just think they were bad DGD rip offs.

 

Also I really liked the last eidola album but the new one was not very good at all. The djent style they explore felt super unnecessary and poorly done.

 

I’m not going to go all revisionist history on Tilian DGD, because I loved it, even if I thought each album had some slogs/flaws. Jackpot Juicer was the first I viewed somewhat negatively, and I really doubt I would if it wasn’t for Tilian’s actions. I still think that was a lot of output without a ton of variation, and I would’ve been cool if they moved on from Tilian say, after ArSe. It’s hard to look back and view it without taking into account his actions though, because some of his lyrics are suspect at best, and extremely creepy. Thinking Lost, Honey Revenge, Bloodsucker, and some others I’m sure.

 

ArSe is a terrible way to shorten an album title haha.

It’s also not revisionist history it’s just growing bored and not liking things as much as time goes on, it happens a ton whether or not a band pulls gross shit like dgd did

Is that one supposed to be a “from a different point of view” song? Or did we just do mental gymnastics to excuse the lyrics?

 

Do you think it’s impossible for a write to writer from the point of view of a bad person? Do you think it’s impossible for writers to write fictional stories? like it’s not mental gymnastics is understanding art isn’t real life. Thomas Erak wrote a fall of Troy song doing the same thing back in the day, it’s a fire ass song with scary lyrics that paint a picture of a maniac. It’s hard to make the argument knowing what we know about tilian but dismissing it outright just because of subject matter is stupid. Do you think horror film screen writers and directors like to kill people?

Do you need a bad character in a movie to turn to the camera and say “this is bad” to understand the depictions on screen aren’t being condoned

 

Media literacy is at an all time low I swear to god man and I can’t believe I have to make this argument about a song tilian wrote of all things but I don’t care

I’ll bow out on that. I can accept they approached it from that standpoint.

 

I really hate to have to make the argument because of tilian but I think music writing is held to a way different standard than other mediums of storytelling and I really don’t think much of anything on acceptance speech scans as autobiographical besides maybe the religion criticism on strawberry swisher part 3

 

This video makes it seem like Gobby is Tilian. So many references

 

I have no skin in the game and don't want to upset sophos more, but I do think writing from the viewpoint of a bad person becomes a little more muddy when this writer is also a bad person lol

 

People been making the argument long before anybody knew anything about tilian
