Yeah I'm also looking forward to Johns being more involved in the cinematic universe. I've yet to see BvS, but I heard a lot of mixed reviews on it.

I would love for him to find success turning those films around. His work on Smallville and The Flash were great.

Not to derail this thread, but as a life long fan of the DC Universe, my feelings about BvS were decidedly unmixed haha. And that is about as charitable as I can be.

As someone who has never read any DC stuff at all (outside of Watchmen), how completely in the dark would I be if I was to read Rebirth?

This is very funny hahaha. I'd say you need to read Rebirth and you wouldn't really be in the dark much at all.

I guess it depends. I would expect you would probably be pretty in the dark regarding the "who and why" elements of the story. A lot of the book focuses on connections and relationships that were a big part of DC in the past, but were retconned out later. So from a "why is this important / meaningful" perspective, there will be a lot lost. But I think the main theme of the story is likely not dependent on any prior DC knowledge. You just kind of have to accept that when the story shows you something, it has some meaning, even if you don't quite know what it is.

Well stated. A lot of it just goes back to Flashpoint and New 52 but there is some deeper stuff in there dating back to Crisis On Infinite Earths from 1985ish but if you understand that DC comics has gotten progressively grim and darker since the 1980s then I think you will be fine with what this is about plus Johns loves Silver Age and DC Legacy characters and he can write the hell out of them. He really is a great writer.

It's so weird that they are basically okay with abandoning the new readership they picked up with the New 52.

    What new readership?

Cool, thanks. Figured a ton would be lost on me, but glad there's probably still enough for me to follow along with.

Not sure if this is a joke.

I hadn't read anything but Bat-classics prior to picking up New 52 trades. I got very heavily invested in all of the stories. Now it just feels like it doesn't matter because they are going to go back to the pre-New 52 stuff.

I'm not trying to say it isn't fair or that they shouldn't, it just seems like a bad business model for anyone trying to jump on.

Btw, if anyone is trying to avoid the Captain America spoilers, I would stay off facebook. They just flat out spoil it in their trending topics.

People upset over the Cap thing are weird. It's clearly Red Skull manipulating him. I'm sure it'll have a decent payoff.

DC readership has dropped off a lot particularly when they moved offices and had those Convergence books out for 2 months. A lot of readers used that as a jumping off point.

New 52 was successful at first but readership quickly dropped. If New 52 was successful then they wouldn't be doing Rebirth. New 52 continuity just didn't make a lot of sense. The 5 year timeline just didn't really work. They didn't actually "restart" everything. They tried to have their cake and eat it too by picking and choosing certain things from Pre Flashpoint instead of just totally restarting.

Not sure if you read Rebirth but it was really good and I wouldn't say they are just "going back to the pre-New 52 stuff".

Not sure this is still going, but Grant Gustin posted this link. DC Rebirth #1 free for first 2500 fans: Redeem - Comics by comiXology

I was able to get it free, but will probably still go buy the physical copy.

That book is fantastic. Black Mask has been on a real hot streak. Space Riders and We Can Never Go Home were great. The whole publisher has a "90s Vertigo mixed with punk rock" vibe to it.

I think that's a fair feeling to have, a lot of the readers of the pre-New52 universe felt the exact same way once Flashpoint happened. But I think there was a lot of really good stuff that happened in the New52 (the entire run of the Batman line was fantastic, as were the Eternal books) and I absolutely see them keeping a ton of it moving forward. All of the Swamp Thing developments seem to be in place, the Green Lantern Corps stuff will continue on just as it continued on from pre-flashpoint. I'm curious to see how they tackle all of the Teen Titans stuff. But give it time before you write it off, there's a lot of good that will be sticking around, and if anything things just became a lot more exciting.

But Batman was really just a continuation of the Pre-Flashpoint Batman run. The only thing they did was try to compress Bruce to being 32 years old and having already had 3 to 4 different Robins within a 5 year period. That didn't really make any sense at all.

Yeah I just saw it this morning. But I still went to the store and bought a physical copy. Also got a little Rebirth poster with it.
