Oh no I didn’t know Silk was a mini series. I’m kind of devastated now

Yea 5 was the last one. Pretty sure they said to be on the lookout for something soon at the end of the issue. Hopefully something ongoing.

I’ve got the first issue on order (but didn’t make it an ongoing order yet ‘cause I wanna feel it out; asking to drop a title always feels awkward to me, lol). Al Ewing, Ram V, & Brian Hitch is just such a strong team of storytellers who I appreciate for different reasons and wouldn’t have thought to put together.

Only major variable for me is how this team clicks with Dylan Brock, but I’m pretty optimistic.

The solicitations said “SILK #1 (of 5),” etc., but Marvel definitely did that whole thing they do where it’s not clear at a glance if it’s ongoing or not, lol.

They tease more at the end, there’s a thread left behind worth exploring, and Maurene Goo is writing a Silk story in the Marvel Voices: Identity one-shot later this month. So, there’s definitely something else coming eventually, thankfully.

I don’t mind, with some characters, doing a series of miniseries (maybe with space in between minis) instead of an ongoing that might canceled prematurely. Feel like that approach sets characters like Silk up for more success.

Did Dylan take over Venom at the end of Cates run? I just finished Volume 5: Venom Beyond so I'm almost completely caught up

Yep, and Eddie is I guess “the King in Black” symbiote god or whatever. Which, I think is a cool status quo to explore. It’ll just be interesting to see how this team, especially Hitch, meshes with a story where it’s a kid inside Venom. I’m optimistic at the moment, given some of Al & Ram’s recent work, but it’s hard to picture what exactly it’ll be. Seems like there’s gonna be some kinda cosmic horror stuff going on in there?

Haven’t been able to catch up on all of the Substack announcements but Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV have a ton of stuff that I’m interested in. Substack is getting into comics

I’m excited overall for what this could mean for the future of creator-owned comics. I have a ton of thoughts running around in my head but haven’t had enough time to process them so that’s all I have on this for now lol.

I’m a lot more skeptical about this Substack initiative than the Comixology one (hope it’s good; just, kinda skeptical right now). But… Jonathan Hickman launching a collaborative world building project with Mike Del Mundo, Mike Huddleston, Ram V, Al Ewing, and Tini Howard!? That’s pretty dang thrilling.

DC revealed that Tim Drake is canonically a bisexual, which is pretty dope.

Oh wow Chip Zdarsky's version of Batman finding "Happiness" in the finale of Urban Legends was chilling. A much different direction than King's image of a "happy" Batman.

Wow. The ending to Seven to Eternity was astounding. Easily Remender's best series and at least top 5 all time favorites.

Zdarsky is going Substack too. I wonder how this will all shake out.

I hate doing negative titles/thumbnails but they do work. FWIW I don't think this will kill the industry but I do have a lot of thoughts about it.

I have the Cho variants of Shang-Chi issues 1 - 3 and plan on getting issues 4 and 5. Issues 2 - 5 will all be valued at around $100 each.

Would it be worth it to get these graded? I intend to just keep them as a collection and I’m not sure if grading will help keep them in prime condition compared to just keeping them in their board.

If they’re 9.8 candidates, maybe, but I’m not sure what the value look like on those. For a lot of modern books anything under a 9.8 will like get passed over for the most part.

If your worried about protection, I’d just go with some toploaders personally. That should keep them safe and sound as long as you’ve got them.

Today’s Free Comic Book Day! Go support your local shop!

Some fun free offerings this year. One of my favorite indie publishers, Silver Sprocket, has one called Fungirl: Tales of a Grown Up Nothing, which looks super fun. One of Marvel’s offerings this year previews the new status quo for Venom & Amazing Spider-Man. IDW has a Star Wars: High Republic Adventures story.

    Though, if you go, remember:

I know I picked it up way after she was introduced and I’m missing a ton of past context but damn, I really think Punchline sucks.

I’m not a fan of her either. I’m kinda glad to hear Tynion is leaving the book because he’s just been adding a lot of new characters with a minimally impactful story, which is a shame because his Detective was really good.

I’m enjoying Tynion’s run actually. I’m really loving the Unsanity Collective and Miracle Molly. It’s just Punchlines seems to be in every single Bat book, or in the backups doing very little to hook me.

Surprisingly successful FCBD. Ended up checking out a shop that had dirt cheap back issues if you bought enough, and I found a decent bit.

Got all but one of the Hopeless/Bagley All-New X-Men I needed, King in Black: Hulkling & Wiccan one-shot, bunch of Kelly Thompson’s Rogue & Gambit/Mr & Mrs X, some Brisson New Mutants I hadn’t gotten yet, Tini Howard & Gilbert Hernandez’s Assassinistas, and other odds & ends.

As for freebies, got a handful of things, but happiest with Fungirl: Tales of a Grown-Up Nothing by Elizabeth Pich, and the preview of the manga Rent a (Really Shy!) Girlfriend vol 1. Also looking forward to reading the preview of the new Venom series.

Oh, and unrelated to FCBD, my friend got this cute Kitty Pryde fig for me on clearance at Walmart, which made me happy:

They’re interesting and I wish were more fleshed out, but I just can’t stand the Peacemaker/Magistrate stuff. It feels so rushed and Ghost-Maker is also really lame to me.
